Former US President G H W Bush has died at the age of 94. His death comes not long after the death of his wife, former first lady Barbara Bush in April this year.
Bush is the father of former US President George W Bush and the second US President who had a son that also went onto become US President. G HW Bush at the age of 94 was the oldest former US living President and his death means that Jimmy Carter is now the longest lived former US President.

Bush was a one term President, losing reelection in 1992 to President Bill Clinton, who he went on to have a close personal friendship with in later years. The first Bush Presidency was very consequential coming at a time when communism was collapsing across Eastern Europe and as Saddam Hussein had invaded Kuwait. Bush handled the challenges soundly but faced the challenges of running for a fourth term of the same party in the White House as well as the challenge from a young and vibrant Bill Clinton and third party challenger Ross Perot lost his bid for re-election in 1992.Born into privilege and a tradition of service, Bush was a son of a senator, celebrated World War II combat pilot, student athlete, Texas oilman, Republican congressman, national party chairman, pioneering diplomat and spy chief. After his own 1980 presidential campaign came up short, he served two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice president before reaching the pinnacle of political power by winning the 1988 presidential election, soundly defeating Democrat Michael Dukakis.
Bush's sons, George W and Jeb went onto become Governors of Texas in 1994 and Florida in 1998 respectively. George W went on to become a two term US President and Jeb unsuccessfully sought the GOP nomination in 2016.
