That we remember is not what actually happened, not history, but those hackneyed impressions they tried to hammer into our memories by constant repetition.

    All beside the point.

    SF called Breen a failure.

Also they rightly claim Breen and co supported the industrial schools and knew about the abuse going on in them.

The gunning down of 2 policemen by 9 attackers...... it was a shameful dirty little action. Why should President Higgins associate himself with it?

Dan Breen did very well out of it.

He got loads of ££££££££££ as a TD.

Him and his FF buddies knew about the children staving in the industrial schools.

4 children left without any parents as a result of this unauthorised ambush.....

Constables James McDonnell and Patrick O'Connell (both Irish born Catholics), had been walking with loaded rifles escorting a horse drawn cart containing a load of gelignite from Tipperary Military Barracks for blasting purpose at Soloheadbeg Quarry (located 3 miles from Tipperary). Constable McDonnell, who was about 50 years was from Belmullet, County Mayo. He was a widower with four children. Constable O'Connell, from Coachford, County Cork, was about 30 years and unmarried. According to the page 1 of The Cork Examiner 21 January, 1919 and Robert Kee author of The Green Flag" (London 1972), p.632, both constables were very popular policemen within the community.

In fairness its a good format though, they always show the two sides, listing the belligerents, strength of forces, caualties etc.
Its a simple way of outlining the general situation to a reader who is looking at it for the first time.

IMO Wee Michael would do well to steer clear of this commemoration. Did constables James McDonnell and Patrick O'Connell even get a chance to cock their rifles before they were killed?

Its a bit like the first victims of the 1916 rising.
The first person killed in the 1916 Rising was an unarmed policeman on duty at the Cork Hill entrance to the upper yard of Dublin Castle.
Constable James O’Brien, born in Kilfergus, Co Limerick, in 1868, had 21 years’ service at the time.
He was killed by a public servant, Abbey actor and member of the Irish Citizen Army, Seán Connolly, who was himself shot about an hour later by a British army sniper. Connolly is believed to be the first of the rebels to have died.
There's a very tragic element to all these stories. Which parts of our history do we really want to glorify?
The answer to that changes over time.

He's the President for the status quo , the Establishment , middle class Red Tories and the FF FG Lab illusion of democracy ...nothing else

Talks a great game about wanting social equality ...but in true irish Labour party fashion Higgins has never done anything about it apart from engage in the usual parish pump cronyism and gombeenism .....all the while stuffing his his deep "socialist" pockets with huge salaries , expenses and pensions.

A marxist landlord and millionaire in a c ountry with underfunded public health and housing with 6 public service pensions amounting to 350,000 a year while still on a salary of 250,000 ...only the Irish are stupid enough to believe it
Is there any Incompetence Scandal or Corruption that would actually make the Irish electorate wake up ....It seems not, so screw em
