12 months today ago Hugh McElvaney burst onto the scene to remind us that "new politics" is much like old politics.

You would expect a nation keen to put an end to gombeen stroke politics would have taken swift and transparent action to make sure we understood this was unacceptable.

Does anyone actually know what happened here?

I'm actually wondering more about the "swift and terrible" justice that was taken.

Is McElvaney still a Councillor, was he expelled from the FG party, etc.

It's all very fine talking about "new politics", but when a gombeen like McElvaney shows up you would hope a political party would do...something???

..like - one of the outcomes of the Prime Time investigation was that many councillors still hadn't signed their Register of Interests or had huge gaps in them. Has there been any legislation to make it a criminal offence to mislead the council in relation to a members interests?

Or even better, to have them automatically dismissed from a council and banned from running again for 10 years.

I would expect that there has been swift decisive action to address the Governance shortfalls identified in this disgraceful episode - similiar swift decisive action as was taken by Inda after the Moriarty Tribunal report was published.
