Jonathan Chait:

'Ever since the fall of 2016, when Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell privately turned down an Obama-administration proposal for a bipartisan warning to Russia not to interfere in the election, the underlying dynamic has been set: Most Republicans would rather win an election with Putin’s help than lose one without it.

The Democrats, brimming with rage, threaten to investigate Russian activity if they win a chamber of Congress this November.

For Putin to redouble his attack — by hacking into voting machines or some other method — would be both strategic and in keeping with his personality. Why stop now?'

Putin has to defend what he won, or he and Trump will be exposed. Like rats in a trap, they are going to come out fighting.

PS It could be very dirty. Putin's first election as President was preceded by mysterious apartment bombings across Russia that many believe were set by the FSB (secret police) to stampede opinion. Two people detected setting bombs turned out to be FSB agents, but the operation was said to be a "training exercise". Trump has a few times said "Something might happen" to justify his regime. Don't be surprised at terrorist attacks in the US before 2020, maybe even this year.

Trump is notoriously mean, why the $100k of ads criticising US Foreign Policy in 1987 ?

Cyp
Back in the 70's he took out ads calling for the Central Park 5 (Black and Latino teens) to be executed. Even though they were innocent, he has never apologised or admitted error, though the person who committed the crimes confessed.

Trump sees the world through a racist white/ non-white binary view. In the 1980s, Americans like him were obsessed with the economic rise of Japan which seems for a time to be about to over take the US as the leading economy.

To call for the two white super-powers to unites against the "Yellow Peril" would be completely in character for Trump. I have no doubt he still sees the world in the same way with "pure white" Russia more favoured than the immigrant-loving European "race traitors", or the Asians.
