40 years ago this week: National Geographic and the Tasaday hoax

A most interesting article in the nature page of today's Irish Examiner, on how the respected society was duped by one of the most infamous propaganda exercises of the Marcos régime, broadcasting a documentary on an "undiscovered Stone Age race". Without repeating the content of the piece, a report revealed the existence of a tribe that lived without any of the trappings associated with civilisation, but while journalists were welcome, scientific visits were restricted. Even before the fall of the dictatorship, the most preliminary investigations were unravelling the claims, and it later transpired the "tribesmen" were locals bribed to participate by a corrupt playboy. So, a hoax for the annals of infamy, along with Piltdown Man!
