By late 1916 the war was going badly for Britain and her allies. Lord Lansdowne, a member of cabinet, even suggested that Britain should consider making peace with Germany. Dissatisfaction was growing with Mr Asquith's leadership of the war effort.

In November 1916, Lloyd George began to conspire with members of the Conservative and Unionist party against Asquith. It was agreed that Lloyd George should form a "war cabinet" of a limited number of ministers to oversee the war effort. Asquith would be sidelined by such an arrangement.

On November 25th Bonar Law presented the proposal to Asquith, who rejected it. From then on Britain was in a political crisis. By early December leading Conservatives were threatening to resign if Asquith did not agree to the proposal. Asquith finally realised he had become isolated and on 5th December he offered his resignation to the King. A few days later, the Germans published a peace proposal but the British swiftly rejected it.

Asquith was deeply embittered by the manner he was forced to resign. He remained leader of the Liberal Party. The Liberal party became split into Pro-Asquith and pro-Lloyd George factions. In 1918 Lloyd George led his faction , supported by the Conservatives, into the election and won an overwhelming majority. Asquith lost his seat.

The deposing of Asquith marked the beginning of the decline of the Liberal party as a major political force in Britain. The coming to power of Lloyd George marked a renewed commitment by Britain to winning the war.

Lloyd George was very conscious that support from America would be necessary to win the war. He was also very worried about the attitude of Irish-Americans.

In 1916 he told Irish leaders
In 6 months the war will be lost....The Irish-American side will go over to the German side. They will break our naval blockade and force an ignominious peace on us unless something is done even provisionally to satisfy America
