A microcosm of all that is wrong with Ireland: US, after taking a hiding, appoints ambassador to Somalia

The US took a hiding in Somalia in the early 1990's

But they never gave up, and kept persisting with the "geographical region"

They now feel enough confidence to formally appoint an ambassador again

Ireland...

Somalia is a conflict zone at the present time, and we advise against all travel to the country. Due to the recent deterioration in the situation, any Irish citizens currently in Somalia are strongly encouraged to leave.
..Because there is no Irish Embassy or Consulate in the Somalia, we’re limited in the help we can offer you in an emergency.
Yep...the yellow bellied Mandarins of Iveagh House have no presence there...the same yellow bellied Mandarins who are all too happy to sell us out to select interests in Europe, and throw our closest partner, the UK under the bus also. The Irish Defense Forces would love to help out there (indeed some have, not sure how they fooled the Sir Humphreys of Iveagh House)

Ireland used to have a strong and credible foreign policy...we were able to trade off our non aligned status...and in the 1950's and 60's ...even made a difference ...then the slide started ...and selling passports was not the nadir

These days...Iveagh House know their job is to don the Green Jersey...sell...sell...sell ...their payoff ? Being allowed to favor Juncker/Hollande and all the rest of the gravy train merchants

Do the Moditariat have deep-seated links to Iveagh House ? Well...does a bear shít in the woods ?

Is it just me that fails to get the 'Ireland' link in the OP?

Do we have a consulate/embassy in every country in the world?
Nope...but Iveagh House avoids conflict zones like the plague ...doesn't even try to offer analysis

Iveagh House is just a Green Jersey marketing office, with a bit of travel advisory thrown in

For starters... a small, even semi covert, sub-embassy presence, that would get the Somali's plight out there

But...do you think such a mission would supply the Mandarians with the smoked salmon and champagne to which they are accustomed ? Or the Grey Goose Vodka and Belgu Caviar some of the more forward thinking, latter day Vichyists have cultivated a taste for

Nothing...all they do is travel advisory or green jersey peddling ...if you example the bilateral aid...you'll see it is from the Frank Flannery/Angela Kerrins school of "philanthropy"

Can you blame them? This is Ireland..not the USA or even Finland.
There's been a mutually re-enforcing anti-evolution ... our Sir Humphreys today...would readily transfer to the Kremlin culture....but certainly not to the Washington culture

Personally I avoid overt dealings with anyone in the Public Service of above APO (or equivalent grade) as most are depraved ...and if they are good...dealing with them overtly only makes them marks

Within the past few years...a ...courageous Minister tried to do a very good thing...he knew enough to isolate the chain of command in his Department ...but...he never figured out that dozens of wannabe Sith Lords were watching the tea leaves ...and they nearly dragged him down

What they did to his family was especially vile...but heck...Haughey, Ahern, Kenny ...what could be expected ?

Once Hillary is ensconced in the WH, I expect tensions against Iran to be stepped up, Somalia's geographical position at the gulf of Aden will become very important.

No doubt what's going on in Yemen will be the catalyst for operation freedom and democracy for Iran.

An ambassador, or consulate, in Mogadishu would have nothing to do.

Plus we are a member of the EU and as a result have vastly reduced foreign policy needs.

If we can get anything of value out of being a member of the EU, surely it is saving money on functions that we have yielded up to the EU.

No benefit worthy of the cost in setting up an embassy in a sh1thole like Somalia.
