A missed opportunity by FF for FF and the country?

Just looking at todays budget and what FF could have done in order to quicken the revival of FF while at the same time "putting right" what is wrong with this country. FF will not win the next election. The vast majority of this FF party, or the front bench at least, will never serve in Govt again. Therefore why didn't the Govt, including the Greens do the following:
1) Taoiseach's salary: Why not reduce it by 30%? It won't impact on Cowen, and he could say that he is leading by example, and therefore seen to take the tough decisions regardless of personal loss, for the good of the country.
2) Reduce the size of the dail by 35/40%? FF will be down to say 30 seats, give or take... 30 seats in a much reduced dail would increase their percentage, and those TD's that are not going to be re elected, or are standing down, it wouldn't effect. Therefore as above they could claim to be making the necessary changes in order to improve the running of the country.
3) Reform, greatly reduce TD's/Ministers expenses. Again, not going to effect them in the future.. and would be seen as the brave decisions.
If these 3 actions (any maybe more, feel free to add to the list) were taken today FF would be back in power, or at least in recovery far sooner than it will be currently while at the same time cutting the fat from the next govt and laughing at them from the opposition benches in the next dail... Also if any of the current opposition parties were seen to object to the above they would have been torn apart for protecting their own interests.... What do you think?

It would be very smart but unfortunately FF are just not that smart. It would be a contradiction in terms for them to actually say they are worth less.

No I understand, and I wasn't getting at you. The point I was making was that whenever we talk about political reform the standard response is that it would be like turkeys voting for Christmas. Well, FF are turkeys, they're gone anyway so they really could have introduced reform which is badly needed, without effecting them in any negative way. In fact, it would probably help them in the long run....
