RTE have just unveiled their new lineup for the world cup. they have included former US women's national team GK Hope Solo in their line up. Solo is a world cup winner and is the most capped American player. she is well qualified for the role and provides gender balance.

However, Solo is still facing charges of domestic abuse for an incident in which she allegedly assaulted her sister and nephew. she has tried legal maneuvers to have the charges thrown out but a superior court reinstated the charges.

Detailed look at Hope Solo's domestic violence case includes reports of her being belligerent in jail

coupled with the arrest, Solo's conduct upon arrest is also an issue telling the cops that "i'll kick your ass" and "this bracelet is worth more than you earn in a year".

Is it appropriate, in the circumstances, for Solo to be given a contract by RTE?

Looks like another own goal from RTE!

How did this USA woman get a work permit? What grounds had the Department of Issuing Work Permits for deciding that there aren't enough competent English speaking current and former female soccer players in the EU who would be capable of performing the "work" that she will be doing?

The RTE sports department is crawling with competent, articulate women - we can see them on the 6 o'clock tv news almost every evening. It's a slap in the face for them too.

Hopefully, Una "the imbecile" Mullally will take up the cudgels on behalf of the articulate sportswimmin of Ireland and the UK!

It's best to turn off the News when they get to the hamstring reports or it will rot your brain.

should RTE not be encouraged to buy Irish , instead of sending a bag of swag out of the country

Alas, it's too late. Marty Morrissey rotted my brain many years ago. :(

I really don't get this "gender balance" bullsh1t. What about COMPETENCE or the ability to do the phucking job? Gabby Yorath is well versed, competent and steeped in soccer. I don't think she got the gig 'cos of "gender balance". Looking for an international goalkeeper? What about Emma Byrne. Or maybe Katie Taylor who was an underage international

She's a tough cookie, getting p1ssed up and bashing her nephew and sister like that. She might be a match for Dunphy-could make for interesting viewing.

In fairness it must be pointed out that for the first time ever, RTE have included a woman (Jacqui Hurley) on the presenting team for the tournament.

Those with an interest in the unusual may like to note that Ms. Hurley has webbed toes!

She's a woman, that's all that matters to RTE.
In fairness they are not the only ones at it. Sky have some lovely looking ladies on some of their sports bulletins who would appear to know nothing about sport, apart from what the autocue says. As for Rte soccer panel, some of the existing ones are painful. Darragh too nice and not a patch on Bill. Dunphy predictable for a long time. Brady a bit of a moaner, Sadlier starting up to the sky when he talks does my head in, Duff fairly poor, Hamann ok. Thought Kenny Cunningham was ok but say he wouldn't put up with Dunphy.

That's it. RTE don't care about providing quality commentary. They just want to have feminist quotas like on 6:1 news.

Having said that, she seems like she might provide some unexpected and unpredicted comments.

She’s a good, opinionated speaker. She’s never been convicted of anything, has no charges pending. She’s an incredibly successful, talented player.

RTE have a solid record in getting decent foreign speakers in (Hamann, Souness, Friedel). I’m not sure why the unevidenced assumption is there that they’ve done a poor job here before she even starts the gig.
