Extremely odd, the Gardaí need to examine if prosecution(s) can be brought against this lady...failing that...name her unless there's compelling reason not to

Paedophile killed Philip Cairns, gardaí believe - RTÉ News
Last month a woman came forward to gardaí with new information.

The woman told detectives that on the day Philip disappeared, she was in a car with Cooke - the DJ and owner of the pirate radio station, Radio Dublin.

...

She said however that when they got to the studios in Inchicore, a row broke out while she was in another room, and that Cooke struck the child with an implement.

She said she went into the room and saw the 13-year-old boy bleeding and unconscious on the floor.

She told gardaí that she then fainted and when she woke up, she was in a car being driven by Cooke. She kept this information to herself for 31 years.

<Edit: I am adding this summary on 15 June 2016>
So in play we've got

(A) An old IRA man
(B) Connected to The nexus of depravity of the Catholic priests in Dublin
(C) Connected to Dublin Fianna Fáil
(D) Connected to top journalists
(E) Involved in pirate radio...and it is well known that backhanders were given for both pirate radio and TV deflectors to the powers that be
(F) Involved in industrial scale child abuse
(G) He must have been investigated multiple times by various gardaí
(H) The dude took decades to be punished for his own abuse (girls), during which time he even committed arson and other acts of intimidation of his victims
(I) Then we find out that he appears to have committed a murder on behalf of his Catholic priest friends

Anyone wonder now why (H) took so long ...

Anyone beginning to see where this could end up going ?

Maybe he was mixed up with other people who were. It's not likely to be a simple explanation and now he's dead we probably will never know.

Perhaps she tried to come forward at the time and was told to shut up. He had media and IRA connections. The Magill article is typical of the sort of denial that was the norm in Ireland back then. Hasn't changed all that much.

Why did she take so long to come forward?
That is truly hard to believe that she stayed silent for all those years after witnessing that incident to the boy.
A horrendous story..that has left many unanswered questions.

I'm skeptical of this story because Cooke was into girls, not boys.
So am I and not only for that reason. Judging by what we read at the time Philip wasn't the type of kid who would go off in a car with someone when he should be returning to school in the afternoon.

I'd give this story as much credence as the one about the babies buried in the garden we had recently.

I find the whole scenario exceptionally difficult to believe. But considering the information is coming through Paul Reynolds that's not surprising. The central issue for me is that the informant 'fainted' upon seeing the beaten and bloody Philip Cairns then regained consciousness in Cooke's car.

Are we to believe there are no witnesses to any of what happened in Radio Dublin?
Are we to believe that she kept her silence for 30 years out of fear?
How was Cooke capable of corroborating some aspects of her statement and not prepared to corroborate others?
As this is withholding information as a witness to a crime she should be prosecuted and made to explain to the citizens of this state, and in particular the relatives of Philip Cairns, all the events that she claimed to witness and why she did not come forward.

This whole cosy cartel between An Garda Siochana and media outlets where information is leaked or media managed is an utter disgrace. This information should have been detailed in a garda press conference where pertinent questions can be raised by all.

This does no-one any favours especially the relatives.

With the limited information available the above opinion may be overtaken by events

That's a good point. Information seems to be a currency in the gardai that is collected by individuals and spent by them as they see fit. It is disgraceful and unprofessional.

P.ie calling for the whistleblower to be prosecuted. How predictable.
She is, at best, a witness to a crime who has withheld critical evidence which would have put a murderer behind bars. At worst she is an accessory to the crime. This, assuming this story has any truth to it.

You, are just a horrible pointless troll.

Hasn't changed all that much.
On the contrary, the Magill article from 1978 shows just how much things have changed.

In the article we are told that staff left Cooke's pirate radio station because they alleged he was molesting children.

"They freely acknowledge that their sole source for this allegation is a 10 year old girl"

Could you imagine the sentence quoted above, being used today to seek to dismiss an allegation of sexual abuse?

Not to speak of the self-exculpating defence "they fail to explain how in his small terraced house with staff coming and going all day, Cooke could possibly have found the privacy to engage in such activities....etc etc"

Knowing what we know all these years later, nobody would forward such excuses today...

Nor, I'm thinking, would we see someone today described as "an innocuous quietly-spoken IRA man"

What hasn't changed at all of course is the belly-aching about RTE and how cutting-edge hoodlums like Cooke are so much better than RTE at appealing to "ordinary people" and "young people" and how these dodgy non-establishment characters are the voice of the future because they have a line to the zeitgeist and are plugged in to the real world, and blah blah...

The pirates rule the airways, but for how long?

2 May 1978 Magill
...
The best known of the "pirates" is Radio Dublin, run by the "Godfather" of pirate radio in Dublin, Eamonn Cooke, an innocuous, quietly spoken IRA man. He operates Radio Dublin from his "two up, two down" terraced house at Sarsfield Tee., Inchicore.
...
The allegations and counter allegaations that have flowed since that deveelopment at the beginning of last month have been impossible to unravel, but a number of key questions arise about the conduct of those who left which so far have not been satisfactorily answered.

They allege that the reason for their going was the discovery that Mr. Cooke had been molesting children at his home in Sarsfield Tc. They freely acknowwledge that their sole source for this allegation is a 10 year old girl, whom they are reluctant to identify, even on a confidential basis, to the press.
DJ put away for 10 years over abuse of girls in home - Independent.ie
Insp Kelly told Mr McCarthy that Cooke had eight previous convictions, including a four-year suspended sentence for an arson attack on one of the complainants involved in the 2003 trial.

I've been banned for years from posting threads on this site because the people who run this site didn't want any reference at all to a prominent journalist charged with child sex abuse. Yet here we are, years later, and no prosecution and no mention of it in our cosy old media and our cosy new media. Anyone who thinks anything has changed in this country since Cairns went missing is deluding themselves. This is the same corrupt tribal kip it always was.

You were making sense until the above.. which is a wow level of weird.

As for the lady's silence.. she could have spared the Cairns family a lot of pain.

RIP Philip

She could have continued to have kept quiet and said nothing. Gone to her grave and no-one would know.
