This is one of the rare internet conspiracy theories which may have some truth to it. It seems that in 2015 a company called Oxitec released millions of genetically modified mosquitos in Brazil. Almost immediately, a new variant of the Zika virus started infecting people and spreading explosively from that very region. Too much of a coincidence?

Oxitec had noble aims - they wanted to wipe out the "Aedes aegypti" type of mosquito to stop the spread of dengue fever. Its the same type that spreads Zika. They engineered a new variant of the Mosquito who's offspring were malformed and died before becoming adults - this mosquito was released in key hotspots around Brazil and worked great. Only 10% of Mozzies survived. The company announced: they had “successfully controlled the Aedes aegypti mosquito that spreads dengue fever, chikungunya and zika virus, by reducing the target population by more than 90%.”

But then within weeks Zika evolved and started spreading rapidly to other mosquito populations. It attained a new symptom - babies born to infected mothers are malformed.

This one should be investigated. Reminds me of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Screwfly_Solution

So the solution to Zika is more intervention. The original connection between the good intentioned intervention why *may* have caused Zika is forgotten.
Less 'forgotten' per se and more dumped discarded onto the ever-growing pile of unproven internet conspiracy theories?
