The Associatiation of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors at their official annual hooley in Killarney will discuss a motion to call for the photography/filming of a guard to be made a criminal offence!

Poll: Should people who identify gardaí on social media be prosecuted?

Quote -

It directs the national executive to call on Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to “introduce a criminal offence of photographing or otherwise capturing an image, moving or otherwise, of a member of An Garda Síochána in the exercise of their duty without the member’s consent and to publish or otherwise post this image on any media with intent to identify this member”.
A separate motion calls for the Commissioner to adequately protect and support members and their families who are being subjected to social media harassment and other forms of intimidation as a result of doing their job.

Are these eejits for real, they are now a substantially discredited institution thanks ebntirely to themselves and now they want carte blanche to act the Bollex goodoh against Irish Citizens, as they have done at Rosport and against proud concerned citizens fighting the IW monstrosity, which is their inalienable constitutional right and indeed responsibility as good citizens!

Also AFAIK as it stands if you fail to comply with a guards order to stop filming them, you are commiting an offence at least against public order!

BTW who can ever forget 1 particular pig covering up his badge number prior to setting out like a psychotic animal to batter the skulls of a few anti-capitalist protesters in Dublin a few years ago!

I see the second issue here concerning social media harrassment of specific guards and their families as a different matter and surely that is already illegal!

Oh and for good measure -

Do you think Ireland will be safer for the ordinary citizen if they get away with this?

Bonkers and unenforceable. How are they getting on undoing those 17,000 wrongful convictions?

Are they trying to deflect attention from them?

THey seem well pissed that Fitzie Fitzie has snubbed them also!

Mind you the motion they are debating on the subject of this thread would be something Blueshirts would love to see in law, given their love of law and order, uniforms and fascist history!

I think there is to be a distinction to be made between filming and posting videos of Gardaí on duty to the Internet and doing so deliberately to identify them. While it may be a small distinction, I think it is an important one and one where the line is crossed.

Very worrying that they even think this debate is a good idea.

You are spot on! There is a host of credibility issues and scandels with An Garda and they choose to pursue an issue that will protect some of their members illegality.

Oddly enough as one anti water tax protester said to me social media and he means easily photographing the great and the good acting the bollex has been a huge game changer in informing the public about the real world and I would suggest the other is that we now have quite a cohort of well educated working class people, which is an even more important factor which should make the likes of the Troika Party Scum shít themselves!

That would only give than an excuse to use excessive force when they want to, they shouldn't be above the law.

In any civilized society a police officer seriously breaking the law, would get an extra tarriff on being found gulity!

Will that ever happen here, no!

If they have nothing to hide, there should be no issues - practice your faith openly!

However, scumbags setting out to harm them using SM etc. is a different matter!

The above shows, an incident on a public road, the key word being public, and they're a public service...

There is plenty of law to deal with that scenario
Really ? Plenty of Law to investigate anonymous sources ? Or plenty of Law to distinguish the malicious from the merely newsworthy ?

Innocent Gardai that obey the law and don't act like Simon Coveney's Auxillary Water Meter thugs have nothing to fear about being posted on the Internet.
