The government has unveiled a whole set of road safety measures which will be implemented under a seven year strategy today. Under these proposals convicted drink drivers may face having alcolocks fitted in to their vehicles, where the car will only start if the test detects that there is no alcohol in their system. Convicted drink drivers may also face having to undergo a driving awareness course in addition to rehab as part of a sentencing option which would be fine in theory, if there wasn't already a serious shortage in rehab places for substance misuse already. They also propose on the spot fines for cyclists who break road traffic laws like going through red lights, which I fully agree with, but who's going to enforce that? Are they planning to stick camera's at each set of traffic lights? Learner drivers will also face prosecution if their accompanying fully qualified driver fails a new alcohol breath test where they are suspected as being over the limit. Does that mean that the accompanying driver will also be prosecuted though? Other measures include;
- Rehab and driver awareness courses for repeat drunk drivers - great but there's already an acute shortage of rehab places for substance misuse.
- Employers will be asked to fit devices in to cars which will only allow drivers to use their mobiles when the handbrake is on. Does any such device exist?
- New laws to prevent car write-off's being sold - well, in the UK you know if a car is a write off - whereas here you can buy vehicles that have been declared write-off's by insurance companies.
- Compulsory breakdown kits - suppose that'll be part of the NCT.
- Devices in vehicles capable of sensing tiredness - again does any such device exist?
- The use of private go safety vans to detect out of date tax, no insurance, nct or the use of mobiles while driving.
