Allegations are surfacing that there was a cover up from top British political circles of Cyril Smith's sex abuse activities

Any decision to prosecute Cyril Smith over allegations of homosexual child abuse could have proved just as devastating to Labour as to the Liberals. The question of who ran the country — so finely balanced because of the lack of a large majority — was at stake.

Throughout these years, Smith, popular throughout the land on account of his bluff Northern manner, was even touted as a government minister, and had served as his party’s chief whip.
And many of those involved in the case — police, victims, lawyers — believe the orders not to press charges came from the top, with Harold Wilson and Jim Callaghan, Labour Prime Ministers during different parts of the police probe, being involved in signing off decisions not to press ahead with charges so as not to upset their Liberal allies.

Why did police officers and prosecutors not realise that it was their duty to disobey illegal orders? The government perverted the course of justice.

Interesting to see Clegg speaking all positive about him, at the time of his death. Did he know anything years ago?

The Lib Dems are totally compromised over this - they must have known what was going on
More reason for them to be wiped in the next election

Clegg and the "Liberals" are too busy pontificating on the morality of the "bigots" who are against gay marriage
to pay attention to their own immoral members history of sodomizing little boys

Tragic if true. I note the readers comments at the end of the article are very dismissive of the entire story. For obvious reasons I'm always wary of claims of wrong doing being made against people who have passed. The truth is elusive is these type of situations.

The Liberals always were two-faced, self-righteous hypocrites - or at least the English ones were (although I have always had a sneaking regard for the great Welsh Liberal David Lloyd George.

There is such denial about sex abuse because at heart most people think people are essentially good and have no real concept of the reality of evil. When you consider how adept a serial child sexual abuser is at deceiving people and how cunning they are behind the mask of the caring respectable pillar of the community you are in danger of losing your faith in humanity. So most people want to pretend evil isn't happening and refuse to confront it and look at it for what it is. It's so much easier to pretend it doesn't exist.
The psychopaths who abuse children or embezzle or commit atrocities and so on know this and learn how to manipulate people's kindness and good nature.

He was a larger than life figure. Grossly obese.

But lived a long life. So much for all the operation transformations now.

But did that mean his northern laughter and jollity, (many obese people project a "funny" side) was hiding something else?

And he's dead now too. Like Savile.

Sher in Ireland we are great dealing with these problems, we still have a cardinal in office, who swore kids that were abused to stay " stum". This excuse of a man was given a meeting with Enda for three to four hours this week. Nothing has changed in this Country, so people MIND YOUR CHILDREN at all times........

I like a person who has the courage of their convictions, well done you! Having said that, I take it you're pretty cool and relaxed about the whole "Black and Tan" thing then?
Nice one! , good to see someone with a sense of perspective for a change.

As a child i clearly remember Cyril Smith appearing regularly on Clunk Click. There was always something strange about his distant gruff demeanour. Smith was the one of the first British MP's who became a political celebrity. The shows host and he got on very well,

There was talk about Smith for years. I can't think why he wasn't charged or why the people of his constituency voted for him

The Black & Tans were Churchill's idea, not Lloyd George's.

Was that a TV show? The seatbelt campaign of the same name was fronted by Savile.
Yes he was a "personality" & as you say one of the first. He was also clever enough to have networked cleverly within the Liberals and at Westminster.

I do not understand this.I thought it was only in Ireland that people were abused and then there was a cover. How could Cyril sMith have abused anyone when he is not a catholic?
