DUP will be delighted with this one not sure about Alliance voters though.

Looks like there is trouble in Alliance over gay marriage, abortion and flag issues.

Gareth Gordon (@BBCGarethG) tweeted at 10:29 AM on Sat, Nov 24, 2012:
North Down Alliance Cllr resigned last night. Expected at DUP conference today

He was only co-opted to be councillor so without electoral or party mandate he'll surely have to step down from council?

With all that's going on in the world how can you get so exercised over "gay marriage" that you feel the need to resign? Pretty skewed priorities.

You'd have to wonder what he was doing in Alliance in the first place.

Oh there is quite a few anti-gay marriage types in Alliance, they just don't say much on the issue.

Calls to resign seats are ritual when there is a defection FROM a Party.
But nobody calls for one when the heroic visionary is joining a Party.
If anyone should resign it should possibly be Andy Muir and the other Alliance councillors in North Down.
Presumably they recommended Harbinson to the council and they nodded him thru.
That seems to be civilised behaviour.
An Alliance councillor..... a much respected one too....dies and as is the norm on most councils a replacement from his party gets his seat.
What Mr Muir ad his colleagues dont seem to have noticed is that Mr Harbinson held such strong views.
They gave him his mandate. And now they just look stupid.
Is there any news on that other Alliance councillor who was on the front page of the Sunday Life last week. Apparently he was directing all enquiries to Party Press Office.
How is that working out for them?

Patrick Clarke was he not in the SDLP before joining Alliance and was he not always a mad man?

Why Alliance allowed him to join God only knows. I appreciate Alliance are trying to build a presence outside greater Belfast but I didn't think they were that desperate.

I believe he joined Alliance in part because he was not selected. I might of course be wrong but clearly SDLPs loss is Alliance Partys gain.
They certainly made a big issue of his defection and breaking thru in Down Council area.
They seem to be less bullish about him this week.
Perhaps he will resign from Council and allow Alliance to nominate a co-option.
Or perhaps he will leave the Party and go "Independent"
Or perhaps he will just stay in Alliance Party and have their full blessing.

I cannot see how anyone who knew him did not know he had such well adjusted views, he writes a religious column for the Larne Times for instance. He clearly has his own mind and will follow his conscience and good for him.

This should be a warning to the SDLP to be wary of their policy. The only saving grace is the fact that no decent nationalist alternative exists

There should be no 'alternatives' within Nationalism, we all read Peaders speech...........only road to go is the Dublin route.

There should be an alternative to the push over socialists in SF, they cannot even get us houses built in Girdwood. When a UI is achieved it will happen in spite of those pushover nationalists

I think he will too - the alliance is no place for him - it is an amoral party. Neither fish nor fowl and tastes awfully bland
