At least another 21 of them are being force-fed through tubes being stuffed into their nasal cavaties and liquefied food forced into their bellies. Shaker Aamer, the last British prisoner being kept at the camp told his lawyer earlier this month that authorities will soon see fatalities as a result of the current action.

Like many other prisoners, Aamer has been cleared for release twice, but is still rotting away in Guantanamo after 11 years. He has never been charged or faced trial but the US refuses to allow him to return to the UK, despite official protests by the British government.

European Union members and the Organization of American States, as well as non-governmental organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have protested the legal status and physical condition of detainees at Guantánamo.

Obama reneged on a 2008 election promise that he would close the camp, indeed he described Guantánamo as a 'sad chapter in American history'. However, in 2011, Obama gave the green light to resume military trials, conducted by military officers, with a military judge presiding, of terror suspects detained at Guantánamo Bay.

The action taken by almost two thirds of the prisoners locked up is a protest against conditions at the centre, as well as the indefinite nature of the remaining prisoners' confinement. In Ireland we are well aware of the heartache caused by hunger-strikes, In the 20th century alone we watched as scores of Irishmen died as a result of it.

The US reaction to the hunger strike was to send for 40 nurses and other specialists. Their arrival was planned several weeks ago as the number of prisoners joining the hunger strike kept growing. Prisoners began the hunger strike in February.

An American Gulag. The Founding Fathers would turn in their graves at such a flagrant attack on the right to Habeas Corpus. To hold someone indefinitely without trial is tyranny. If anything places like these turn people into terrorists. If the Americans have the evidence against them then let it stand up in a civilian court - if not in the US then in the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

Gulag, eh?

Number of deaths in the Gulags 1,258,537 officially (some estimates go to as far as 10,000,000).
Number of deaths in GTMO: 6 suicides and 3 deaths.

It should be acknowledged that scores of those released have returned to the battlefield to kill again. That said, internment wasn't right in NI and it isn't right here. Not bringing these people to trial is shameful and tarnishes the record of the USA.

They should all go to trial as soon as possible and be sentenced or released and sent home. Those not found guilty of any wrongdoing should also be compensated. Obama wants this place gone. The senate won't allow it.

Maybe next time they won't be in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong skin.

Or event better maybe they could carry incriminating evidence with them to help ease the path to a speedy conviction.

Glad we allowed them to use Shannon as a pitstop for the old renditions.

23 now being forced fed in Guantanamo. It's now been revealed that the hunger strike was commenced over Obama's failure to close the camp as once promised. In effect the only way they will leave the camp, is in a wooden box.
