First of all, I'll freely admit to buying books online; there's a lot to be said for the convenience and range on offer. But there comes a time when you have to start thinking of the ethical dimensions of your consumer behaviour, and this may well signal one of those times:

Amazon 'used neo-Nazi guards to keep immigrant workforce under control' in Germany - Europe - World - The Independent

If this story turns out to be true, I, for one, would find it hard to continue using Amazon's services, I confess.

Workers were allegedly frisked to check they had not walked away with breakfast rolls.
Reminds me of that scene in Blood Diamond where the guards overseeing the diamond-panning slaves check the mouth of one at gunpoint - and then shoot him when he coughs up the stray diamond he tried stashing away. Except with, you know, breakfast rolls instead of diamonds.

And no shooting......

ARD suggested that the name “HESS Security” was an allusion to Adolf Hitler’s deputy, Rudolf Hess.
To be fair, how likely is that in a country so hyper-aware/paranoid of any displays of Nazi sympathy that showing a swastika flag except in specific circumstances is illegal?

When you get a company of amazons size there are always going to be labour issues. Costs are cut to the bone and staff are the ultimate loosers, especially in a distribution environment.

Funny how Germany is the location as I would have thought workers rights were paramount on our Shining light of all that is European?

Interesting OP. The whole amazon/kindle thing has occupied me of late. I got a iPad passed onto me at Christmas and it had a Kindle App on it. I had sworn to stick with the "proper" way to read books but quickly became addicted to the new method.
However, I feel guilty about not supporting the local booksellers and this, if true, will certainly make me review my policy again .

Sorry I rarely buy books anymore, travelling a lot means little room for reading material, so the iPad is my book, my television, my musci centre and my lifeline.

I rarely get books any more on Amazon but I have become a fan of the audio book and use Audible, an Amazon company so that may have to come to an end shortly. As regards local booksellers, my favourite kind of shop, I tend to visit them regularly and have to fight hard to resist the temptation to tuck a book or two under my arm.

I find the Book Centre in Wexford town very good and the whole coffee and scone thing while perusing a book is an experience. I have also ordered books by phone and they text me when they arrive. A nice place with good staff.
