This election is a golden opportunity we simply cannot squander the future of our country.
We are shortly going to be getting leaflets through our letterboxes.
Don't passively reach down and pick the FF/FG/Lab/SF/ULA leaflet off the mat take a skim through it and throw it in the bin along with the Christmas Tesco offers.

Instead burst out through your front door and run after the party activist who is doing his/her rounds and DEMAND that they explain to you how their party plans to pull the country out of the economic crisis - how they plan to reform our society, how they plan to get it moving again, growing again, get young people working again, get the people who are emigrating in droves to have confidence in this country as a future location to live and rear their children.

SCREAM and ROAR at them if you must. Make a scene. Make them turn white with fear.

Because as far as I can see FF are a spent force who are not going to bother canvassing in many areas for fear of being pitchforked and lynched.

FG and Lab think they have this election sown -

FG think we will be good little peasants and accept the massive cuts while the billy clubs will keep us in line.

Labour think we were only destined to hold out our bowls for the gruel.

They will take control of the oak panelled offices and they will get the Mercs and the state pensions vacated by FF and they will tell us to accept our lot.

SF neo-gombeens are wrapping the green flag around them and talking guff hoping to crowd out better candidates who should be rushing to fill the vacuum of power in this country.

The brightest, the most talented, our entrepreneurs must be at the front line of reform, they should be the people taking this country and our economy by the scruff of it's neck and getting on with growing our economy again, encouraging inward and foreign investment and making this country a place to do business, to work and to live.

Our society is broken from top to bottom - our legal system is for a Victorian age, the Catholic Church is a carrion crow feeding on a rotten corpse, our banks are exposed as Shylocks, our political class are ignorant gombeens every last one and our media are glove puppets of the rich and powerful.

We need to sweep them away and create a new constitution and reform our entire society from top to bottom.

We cannot allow the vacuum to be filled be extremists, moonbat lunatics and freaks like SF and socialists.

We the citizens must taken control because we work, live and want a future for the generations after us.

It's not good enough for the FF Tweedledum to be replaced by the FG/Labour/SF/Socalist Tweedledee.

WE NEED A NEW DEMOCRATIC REVOLUTION!

Small variation...... follow them out by all means but there is no point in shooting the messager. Tell them that if Mr/Ms X wants your vote then they need to come down and knock on your door themselves, in person. Then you can let rip......

i would agree with most your opinion piece, but i do feel that putting socialists and sinn fein should not be banded in with moonbat freaks and lunatics. i firmly believe that, that is the type of politics that have governed this country between FF,PD's and Greens over the last 13 and half years. Socialists and even Sinn Fein wouldn't have made as much of a mess. however i absolutely agree with you about chasing after candidates and their election workers looking for answers. i certainly will be ready for them and won't be taking no crap from. i hope many others do too. A real alternative is really required now and a great national talk on who we are, where we are, where we want to get to and how to take the parish pump back out of national politics.thank you again for excellent post n keep up the good work

Did that with FG during the last GE, the loathsome Catherine Byrne and Gay Mitchell were hiding behind my next door neighbour's hedge and they sent a very naive young girl to my door. The both know my form from past experience and when I told the young canvasser that she was being taken advantage of and to send the candidate in they ran. Did not go near any other houses on the road.

A couple of weeks ago, I chased a trio of vegies down the road with their leaflet - however, it was like talking to the dumb animals they are so fond of, in fact I think I would have had a more intelligent converstion with a stag, hunt dog or mink!!

Don't scream and shout at them. They LOVE that per se as they can just paint you as a 'looney' and it could stick. Be calm upfront and fortright with your questions, and ask it at your front gate so your neighbours see whats going on, and may even come out to have a listen . they HATE this!!

I remember during Lisbon 1 I engaged Joe Costello outside ILAC centre. I spoke calmly and fortrightly with him, and challenged him on aspects of the treaty Labour had told lies about. I also paraphrased some of the treaty to him when talking. A crowd had gathered round me and Joe to hear what was being said. This alarmed him and more importantly his lackies who desperately tried to pull him away from me!

THAT is what fills them with dread!!!
P.S. Don't forget to ask them about the Lisbon jobs, and can they pinpoint were they are - I've looked high and low and could not find them, but they seemed so sure before the treaty vote that they were coming, so "show me the jobs!" ;)

Maybe it would be better if we didn't have any political parties at all, if nobody bothered to give of their time, energy and resources to give people electoral options, and we all just stayed at home and ranted on the Internet 24 hours per day?

agree and disagree. Yes we need political reps etc etc. We need our democracy.Of that there is no doubt. But on the other hand if you go to millions of peoples doors with a fistful of lies and empty promises and dont deliver then you should expect to be challenged on the doorstep.

Of course you should be challenged.

However, suggesting that political volunteers should be humiliated is stupid, particularly coming from people who would sooner sit in and watch Coronation Street instead of actively participating in their country's democratic process.

Incidently, anyone planning to stage some stunt for canvassers should be advised that politicians on your doorstep aren't shy about giving you some of your own medicine. They've met a lot more nuts than you've met politicians, and if they know they aren't going to get a vote from you, there's no reason to maintain the veneer of diplomacy.

No one has argued for that so stop being hysterical. We need political reform in this country and the only way we'll get it is if we, the citizens, demand it vocally and forcefully.

No, the only way you will get it is if you stop bitching about the people who have chosen to involve themselves in politics and present yourselves (whoever you are) as an alternative.

thats fair enough in some respects. Whilst individuals should be challenged and challenged strobgly it should always be done in a respectful manner which is difficult when some of them have been disrespectful to the people they want to get votes from. Its very hard to be nice to a man or woman at your door when you know, in your heart, that persons politics, party and actions mean you are just about to be turfed out of the house in which you stand. There must be an understanding of frustration and how sometimes it manifests itself. Incidents will happen, of that there is no doubt but lets try and understand why. lets not forget that

There are other ways to involve yourself in politics other than by elected office. The point is that our political system needs reform and that until this happens we will still get the same type of dysfunctional politics that we have always suffered from. We need to force the current political parties to reform the system, though they will resist as it is not in their interest. Until this reform is done a new type of politician and a new type of politics will not emerge.

This is the authentic voice of a proto-Fascist. The system which made you is now crumbling and you're in danger of sliding down the crooked rungs of the class system into bitter imbecility. Entrepreneurs? Yeah, not much noise from the risk-takers these days as ALL citizens pay for their mistakes.

If private debt can be socialised, why not private profit?

P.S. Your Nazi username is vile.

I don't subscribe to the gombeen politics of FF/FG/Lab

And I don't subscribe to SF terrorist/mafia scumbags nor neo-communist lunatics who seek to fill the vacuum

We need a democratic revolution - we need ordinary people who are dissatisfied with the political parties on offer to band together and form their own.

Government by the people, of the people and by the people.

We have allowed cosy cartels inside the law society, the unions, the civil service, the banks and among our political elite to steal our republic and our democracy from us.

They have bankrupted our country and they expect us to take it lying down.

Meanwhile political extremists, crack pots and terrorist/criminals are trying to gain ground and submerge this country the mire even further.

We need new democratic political parties, we need an absolute purge of the political elite - not just FF but all the current political parties.

We need new people elected to Dail Eireann - people with ambition, integrity, honesty and courage who can take the country by the scruff of the neck, institute reform of civil society and get the economy growing again.

We cannot continue with the failed gombeen system, we cannot fall back to irrational ultra-nationalistic cant from SF and we cannot descend into extreme left lunacy of the ULA.

We need real radical alternatives in this country coming from the CENTRE.

This must also be a European wide movement.
