There is a lot of talk about incompetence, waste of resources, inflated egos and sense of entitlement in our government. Some say that we'd be better being run by the EU (some say we already are).

Now, while many EU member nations tighten their belts the EU budget has gone up and, thanks to Lisbon, more money is tasted on "administration" than ever before.

But that's not all. We're also paying for holidays for MEPs and their staff too. Except they're called "study breaks" because that sounds better.

Some 250 MEPs, 80 parliamentary assistants and 70 civil servants working for EPP took off on Tuesday to the holiday island for a three-day trip.

Rooms have been reserved at two five-star hotels on the island, the Pestana Carlton and the Pestana Casino.

The EPP has paid for the trip out of what is known as "line 400" of the EU budget which is financed by taxpayers and can be claimed by political groups in the European Parliament.

Few really care about the ego or sense of entitlement or even bloated expense accounts of our leaders provided they demonstrate competence and justice in their decision-making. That is why some long for an outside adjudicator to make cuts - no-one trusts FF (or FG) to fairly distribute the cuts and additional tax burden without giving preference to their supporters. So the EU and IMF start to look like the least worst options (wrong IMO).

As an aside, the private sector suffers from this kind of thing too. Corporate divisions take their piece of flesh from cut-to-the-bone operations and go enjoy themselves. I've been to a small number of these occasions, where without irony middle managers ask for ideas on budget savings in the plushest meeting room on the top floor of a 5* hotel in Barcelona during, yes, a 3 day session... Yet when there's blame for losses, the sh1t flows right back to those operations.

Fianna Fail have had the best part of the last twenty years in power and as they say we are where we are . I really hate this all parties are the same , the other crowd are no better mentality because its like music to Fianna Fail ears . They know that if people think 'they're all the same ' they'll just think whats the point in changing we might as well just vote Fianna Fail again , and then we'll find them back in power .

I find it hard to believe that within the cohort of thousands of eurocrats that there is waste or abuse of funds going in. I'm shocked.

400 people and they only manage to blow 350k sterling? That's what, about a €1000 a head? On a three day trip to Madeira?

What a bunch of amateurs.

It has been said that EU governance is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time
