China is CONTROLLING EU: Shock warning China using financial clout to influence Brussels

Proposals to make life more difficult for Chinese investors to muscle in were watered down by eurocrats leaving big hitters from the east free to snap up Europoean companies in strategic sectors.

France, Germany and Italy are all keen to restrict Chinese takeovers and were dismayed when their joint call on the European Commission to “examine ways to screen investments from third countries” hit the buffers.

The wanted to give the Commission powers to monitor and potentially block foreign takeovers of Europe’s most cherished companies — high-tech firms like German industrial robotics maker Kuka, which was bought last year by a Chinese manufacturer of washing machines and rice cookers.

But their protectionist language did not make it into the final conclusions of a June summit and was replaced with watered-down wording welcoming an existing Commission initiative to “analyse investments from third countries in strategic sectors”.

An ad hoc coalition of smaller countries that included traditional champions of free trade like Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands was blamed for derailing the proposals.
So there now .. not even France and Germany and Italy knew this .. and all the time we thought we were being controlled via Brussels by Germany, France and Italy :D

Well that beats banagher .. I for one welcome our Chinese overlords :D

Maybe not now (it is the Express after all, the Sunday Sport for deepest Dorset) but there will come a point when China demands the EU eliminate agricultural subsidies within the EU and Brussels won't be able to do anything else but negotiate a staged compliance.

Free market rules are behind the Chinese on this and the big shoe will drop at GATT talks one of these days.

Apart from all the internal lobbying weight the Chinese will have when it comes to their notable buying up of infrastructure around Europe.

As I've said before on other threads while the Americans have been playing Risk around the world the Chinese have been playing Monopoly. And they are not far off holding the bank now.

One of those papers which clings on in the hope of reaching a single moment of stardom in the history of the media.

There was a tabloid (possibly the Sunday Sport) which reached a sort of circular media nirvana in the early 1990s when it announced, alongside an iffy grained photograph, that a double-decker bus had been found on the moon.

Cue uproar.

Couple of days later they ran another less grainy photo alongside a headline which said 'Double-Decker Bus on Moon Disappears'.

Pure class.

The Chinese might not control the EU but they are being allowed to buy far too much infrastructure and land in the West.

Its not the case that the PRC controls the EU.

However, the way the EU is so inherently un-democratic, Arab sheikhs, the US, one or more globally-spanning Multi-National Corporations or a combination of the above can control the EU, and there is little John or Jane public can do about it.

Something about racist attitudes etc etc.

But you may still have a point. How as Socialists are we to consider this. It's not sufficient to say we are blind to foreign ownership of assets since bringing those assets under domestic control becomes next to impossible when owned by a behemoth like China nor can we kick the can by saying generically we oppose all such ownership since a company owned by China is different to a company owned by italy.

Bar ducking the question or else making cheap jibes about now sounding like Bannon what should be our response.

You raise a good point and I hope it can be discussed.
