That was a popular toast in Wexford at the time. Protestants were in a minority everwhere except in parts of the north. The Irish Times had somd good myth busting pieces in the 200th anniversery editions.
The 'Irish' Times...how fking ironic

It was the Kilkennys who pissed on the gunpowder, hence the reason they are called "The Pissy-Powders".

The battle of Vinegar Hill was lost, but there's a lovely song and some of the battles were won, like Oulart Hill. It's history and more than that, it's a beautiful scenic area that visitors like to visit. It was not a war of Protestant against Catholic, but landholder against serf. The same kind of war was being fought in France and America around the same times.

Ordinary tax payer against the greedy establishment. It will happen again soon, I promise. Pikes to the ready!
Aha...

Urine can in fact be used in the manufacture of gunpowder, and it has historically been a very important source of one of the crucial ingredients in gunpowder — saltpeter, also known as niter. This nitrate compound is what allows gunpowder to rapidly oxidize and catch fire, generating an explosion that can be used to fire munitions. In the modern era, there are less smelly ways to get saltpeter, typically through an industrial process that uses ammonia as a base.

The Wexford rebellion started after a leading United Irishman, Anthony Perry, was tortured by the Crown forces. Perry was himself a Protestant originally from Co.Down who was living at Inch on the Wexford-Wicklow border. Pitchcapping involved putting burning tar on a victims head and pulling it off, taking much of a victims skin with it.

Horrible savagery. We were told in school about the flogging, drag hanging and the pitchcapping, but they conveniently left out the bit about the rebel counties finest doing it.

Well it was in our history books either in the late 80s or early 90s. I knew of it. The Catholic church was only starting to emerge from the worst of the Penal laws starting with the 1778 Catholic Relief Act. They feared the French Revolution spreading to Ireland through Republicanism, having seen what happened to the Church in France. The bishops even supported the Act of Union as Pitt promised Catholic Emancipation (a promise King George III blocked from being kept). No doubt this played some part in Catholics joining the militia.

Reports on social media of plans to build houses and a nursing home on Vinegar Hill.

The historian Damien Shiels has tweeted that anyone who wants to lodge objections should do so this week.

Irelands record on preserving national monuments leaves much to be desired as the fate of the Viking site at Woodquay, the Rock of Tara, and Carrickmines Castle show.

Surely all of this could be fitted in at st senans rather than vinegar hill

And reports in the local paper back in January. Plans for 90-bed nursing home and 95 housing units
