I agree with you a little also Hitch - I just find the religious types obsession with atheism amusing. Why doesn't everybody just leave everybody else alone? In a generation or two superstition would die out.

Religion is all man made, churches were built with concepts such as solemn, reflective etc in mind - so the design aesthetic of churches will likely have an appeal that transcends mere religion. Personally I quite enjoy the design of many religious buildings and would be happy to see them put to another use.

Does it serve a social function, because any but the most dogmatic atheist can have their social needs met in the company of *gulp* theists.

There is no necessary conceptual connection between atheism and, for example, having a sense of irony (or indeed a sense of humour).
