The “simulation hypothesis”

which argues that what we experience as reality is actually a giant computer simulation created by a more sophisticated intelligence.

If it sounds a lot like The Matrix, that’s because it is.

I do sometimes wonder many otherwise intelligent people have drifted away from what humans have known for thousands of years

- The Universe was Created

- by the Creator

Reasons to believe that the universe is a simulation include the fact that it behaves mathematically and is broken up into pieces (subatomic particles) like a pixelated video game. “Even things that we think of as continuous – time, energy, space, volume – all have a finite limit to their size. If that’s the case, then our universe is both computable and finite. Those properties allow the universe to be simulated,” Terrile said.

Is our world a simulation? Why some scientists say it's more likely than not

The Truth stares them in the face

- yet they reject it

Why?:?

A fella called Hilary Putnam had interesting things to say about the hypothesis you mention a good few years ago: namely that we simply couldn't be in such a universe, because if we were, the statement to the effect that we in such a universe would be meaningless, as there would be no possible way of making the words in that statement to refer to anything that actually existed in reality.

Take a look at his book with the unpretentious and unambitious title "Reason, Truth and History".

is it elon musk that giving funding to some scientists to research this. this is just one of the lead into gold question that people with too much time on their hands and money get to wonder about. Maybe it shows the rot in academia that anyone with a cheque book gets what they want

That would only work if we were unaware that we were involved in a simulation, and couldn't refer to anything beyond.

If we can talk of it as a possible simulation, as we are now, then we must be able to refer to something other than the simulation.

No?

Who cares? Look after your mind and body, try to win in the battle against man's propensity to do evil, and try to be as happy as humanly possible. If life is a simulation, it can suck my haemorrhoids.

Musk is a bit of a tit, but the theory is plausible and should be taken seriously until evidence points in a different direction.

This is a dumb idea. Its based on the premise that 'the universe seems to be based on math' and 'I think it shouldn't be'.

This is nonsense - math is based on the universe, not the other way round.

There is literally no evidence for this theory.

Its the only theory that fits with quantum mechanics.

there as been a push in certain areas of science to abandon scientific principles and instead come up with "beautiful" theories which are utterly unfalsifiable or lack any credible basis to research or gather evidence. It must be great to get the grants though you can keep churning out garbage and get paid to do it

Everyone of us is 'just' a 'brain in a jar'.

How can you possibly prove/disprove that argument?
You can't.

So why bother?

Hmmmm......someone out there is watching us. Personally I have always been fascinated by the idea.

The question is .........who.

Im guessing an 8th grader and this is his science project, hopefully he doesn't power down his laptop

But if Moores law continues to be true then in 1-2 hundred years we will be able to create a virtual reality that could not be distinguished from our current one, if the theory is correct then its highly unlikely that we are the original.

A very smart and rich tit that could very well end up changing the world as we know it.
