Newton Emerson: All Arlene Foster is learning in office is arrogance

Interesting opinion piece in the Irish Times today from unionist writer Newton Emerson, who accuses Foster of being a curt, angry "curmudgeon" who has been "laughably" incompetent in presiding "over a disastrous green energy scheme called the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which subsidised biomass boilers." in which taxpayers were ripped off by farmers to the tune of £1 billion.
He also suggests that her recent attempt to start a row with Dublin over Brexit was more just an attempt at angry posturing designed to keep the hawks in the DUP content.
Opinions?

Spot on, I'm afraid. She started off so well too, but the position of FM seems to have a bad affect on her.

I think he has called it about right.

It's a terrible indictment of the NI Assembly that she is probably the most capable MLA there.

I predicted she would be an unremitting disaster.
She isn't a disaster as FM. Her disaster was as minister of DETI.

The problem with Politics in NI is that anyone with any capability or good experience in the real world isn't attracted into it. This has largely been the case since the troubles began.

Nonsense. There's talent in all the parties.

Petulant, brusque, irritable, stubborn, bad tempered ....sounds like most women (call me a misogynist). Arlene just does it in full public view.

O

Oscurito

It would have been better if she were a Free Prezzie.

Being C of I, she has to prove that she has no High Church notions - with all that that entails.

you might be Petulant, brusque, irritable, stubborn, bad tempered , if your entire life was built around bigotry , gospel singing , and 3 litres of coca cola per day

Are you seriously suggesting that Coca-cola consumption (?) is partly responsible for Arlene's puerile behavior? I put it down to the menopause..

"There she presided over a disastrous green energy scheme called the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which subsidised biomass boilers. Its key flaw was laughably obvious – there was no cap on usage, unlike the English scheme it copied. So there was nothing to stop farmers and businesses heating empty barns and warehouses around the clock, which they duly did, incurring a taxpayer liability of £1 billion.

The assembly’s Public Accounts Committee has just begun hearings into this fiasco and serious embarrassment is expected. Last week, a senior official conceded it was “one of the biggest scandals since devolution”.

"Yet Foster remains petulant and unabashed. She dismissed questions on the issue by saying she could not be expected to see “every jot and tittle” of policy. Then, incredibly, she blamed the Assembly’s enterprise committee, which scrutinised her as minister, for not spotting the mistake."

She's inept, highly condescending, bad tempered and ill mannered.

Only in an assembly consisting of yellowpack duds could you ever get away with defending your gross incompetence by pointing out the failings of other idiots.

with two chicken houses and payment guaranteed for 20 years, I'm nice and toasty.
As famers now say about Arlene,
"She's the hottest thing to come out of Fermanagh"
