Video in link.

Australian Minister for Consumer Affairs, Marlene Kairouz, has sparked outrage amongst the Irish community down under following a warning to Australians stating:

"If anybody knocks on your door that has an Irish accent, automatically ask them to leave"
The warning follows an increase in the number of home improvement scams on the elderly.

Of course, this is unacceptable and racist language. I just hope that we make an appropriate response to this.

She is not wrong though even if her choice of words was poor.

Well the message she is trying to convey is that Irish Accent = Trouble.

People are very quick to call out racism elsewhere but when it is directed at us, it appears to be a case of "ah sure it's probably warranted to be sure to be sure".

Are we a 'race' or simply a 'nationality'?

The word race and racism seems to mean nothing anymore due to the extent of its over use and the inaccuracy of its use in many cases...

So there's some Irish scam artists doing in Australia what many Irish scam artists do the world over... I honestly don't see the issue with highlighting their nationality although I'd probably advise people not to accept work from anyone who knocks at their door trying to sell goods and services.

Sure. Some Irish people in Australia are scam artists. But most are not and are genuine workers. Using language like "lock your door to anyone with an Irish accent" conflates the entire Irish people as scam artists. That is racist.

It's xenophobic rather than racist. Xenophobic and ignorant to be accurate.

There is no Irish race, look up the definition of racism.

https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/abroad/they-send-a-lot-of-gob************************es-out-here-now-the-emigrant-divide-in-australia-1.3256641

“It has changed a lot,” said Fitzsimons, who left Dublin at 16. “They send a lot of gob************************es out here now. I am serious about that. All they think about doing is going to the pub, getting pissed and getting in trouble.
“Years ago it was mostly families and all that. But then when the recession came in Ireland, they came out.”
Phillis McGrath calls some of these recent Irish emigrants “bludgers” – Australian slang for scroungers. They arrive in Australia with not enough money to support themselves, she says, and the bureau steps in to help them.
“This was started for the old people to look after the old people and it has gone the other way,” she said.
Eugene O’Rourke (76) said that many Irish come out at Christmas time when the weather is warm and “they have one too many and they forget where they are”. There are drownings, car accidents, other tragedies.
