Inspired by the Films to recommend or advise against thread which iconic movie characters do posters consider to be the best movie villains of all time?

A good antagonist is in my view more important than a good protagonist in making for a successful story, so here are some picks from the website ranker:

1. The Joker - The Dark Knight.
2. Darth Vader - Star Wars iv-vi.
3. Hannibal Lecter - Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon, Hannibal, Hannibal Rising and Manhunter.
4. Lord Voldemont - Harry Potter 1-7.
5. Freddy Kruger - A Nightmare on Elm Street.
6. Jack Torrence - The Shining
7. The Terminator - The Terminator. (but not the sequels)
8. Agent Smith - The Matrix 1-3.
9. Emperor/Chancellor/Senator Palpatine (aka Darth Sidious)- Star Wars i-iii & v & vi
10. Magneto - X-Men 1-6.
11. Norman Bates - Psycho I-II & remake.
12. Hans Gruber- Die Hard
13. Hans Landa - Inglourious Basterds.
14. Scar - the Lion King.
15. Sauron - The Lord of the Rings 1-3 and the Hobbit 1-3.
16. Anton Chirguh - No Country for Old Men.
17. Michael Myers - Halloween.
18. T-1000 - Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
19. Bane - the Dark Knight Rises.
20. Jaws- Jaws.
21. Xenomorph - Alien.
22. Joe Doe - Seven.

Is there any character you feel should be in the top 22?

Are there any in the top 22 that shouldn't be there?

Comments?

I think The Scarecrow from Batman Begins should be in there, and continuing the Batman theme also Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman from the Tim Burton movie.

Another great female villain was yer wan from Misery.

Born to play villains alright:

Both Francis Dolarhyde (aka The Great Red Dragon) and Amon Goeth are better villains than Voldemort in my opinion. Who is actually kind of lame even for a kids movie baddie.

Drop Jaws and the Xenomorphs. Not villains.

Replace with Nurse Ratched and Goeth.

Personal fave would be Clubber Lang.

Great intro killing off Twilight. Loser from then on out. A movie version of skeletor, incompetent except at beating up his own people.

Strangely enough I don't see Clubber as a villain - if anything he is just out for what is rightfully his i.e a shot at the title just like Rocky in the first two movies.

That’s what makes him a great villain, a genuine sense of grievance. The white darling is being protected with scrubs, while a higher rated black man from a tough area is kept down.

Also worth listening to Ghost Face Killah’s “The Champ’ great workout music and heavily samples Clubber’s stuff.

Honorable mentions in my opinion:

Lil' Ze from City of God.
Harry Powell from the Night of the Hunter.
Calvin Candie and Stephen from Django Unchained.
Commodus from Gladiator.
Bill the Butcher from Gangs of New York.
Middle Eye from Apocalypto.

Some good ones there. The ones you see less of are more menacing (IMO).

John Huston's Noah Cross shewerly deserves to be in any top ten villain list? "Ye see Mr Gittes, most people never have to face the fact that at the right time and the right place, they're capable of anything."

Fernando Rey's "Alain Charnier" in The French Connection.

Dennis Hopper's "Frank Booth" in Blue Velvet

Alex De Large in A Clockwork Orange (McDowell)

Stephen Ihnat's mute villain in The Chase

Richard Lynch, Peter Fonda and JP Law in Open Season.

Palance in Shane

Henry Gordon in King's Row

Michael Gothard's Bond villain in For Your Eyes only (also a mute). He's also wonderfully weird as the Exorcist in The Devils

Robert Shaw's Red Grant in From Russia With Love.

Oldman in Leon.

Vinny Price in Witchfinder General.

It was a tv show, but Gordon Jump's shop keeper in Diff'rent Strokes.
