18.10 Fine Gael's Michael Ring told the Dáil that when Queen Elizabeth visits Ireland, possibly next year, we should hand control of the country back to her and tell her we are sorry for the mess we made of the country.

Well in fairness, we are unable to govern ourselves, our former Taoisech hides in a cupboard promoting a british tabloid.

Irish Royalism hasn't disappeared, Cael. Note the popularity of a certain regal crisp brand within the Pale.

Is it not simply the case that Ring fancies himself as a bit of a wit, tho he's far from funny ... often seems to be mouthing off or shouting in the background in the Dáil Chamber

What a ridiculous thread. I thought it was only idiot Fianna Failers who were spinning Ring's musings as evidence of FG "West-Britishness".

Humour is clearly not a requirement for true believers in your cause.

Anyway, it will be too late.
Lenihan has arranged to hand over the state to Commissioner Rehn in two weeks time.

Will they arrange a special ceremony in the Upper Castle Yard as in January 1922 when Collins took over from the British or will Biffo just do it in the bar of the Merrion Hotel?

It was a joke, Cael, you muppet.

He was being ironic.

Try looking up the words 'joke' and 'ironic' if you don't understand them. :p

Ivan Yates on Friday and Michael Ring today. Who'll be next, from FG, to suggest something along these lines?

Come on, it was tongue in cheek. Ring is the least blue of the blueshirts, so much so that he is the only FG TD I know who manages to get a lot of traditional FF votes; no doubt due in no small part to his being perceived as the most non FG, non Patrician T.D ever, who is rarely seen as up his own posterior the way some intellectual oligarchs are.

It is entirely thanks to Ring that a FF stranglehold on Mayo from 1980 to 1994 in which they had four out of six seats and then four out of five was broken. They have only had two since with FG having mostly 3 out of 5, save one election. Even during the Bertie era FG consistently out polled FF in Mayo and if you can get Republicans in Newport and Erris even voting for Ring, you can be sure he is not seen as licking her Majesty's derrier the way John Bruton did her first born's.
