In the first bit of common sense to emerge from a non-science related Nobel Prize committee in a very, very long time, Bob Dylan has won this year's Nobel Prize for Literature.

A worthy winner, IMO.

Post your favourite lyrics.

I have a million, but I'm particularly fond of the epigrammatic "Money doesn't talk, it swears."

I don't know if I quite get this?
What, he's a poet?

What books has he written?

I know he wrote a few songs but literature usually involves books and poetry.

His finest hour: 'Went to see the gypsy / Stayin' in a big hotel / He smiled when he saw me coming / And he said, "Well, well, well.'

Fully deserving of the Nobel Prize.

Brilliant. As a stone Dylan fan, I'm thrilled. But I imagine this will be a tad controversial.

Hope Joni gets it next year.

But they are song lyrics?

It is not poetry or literature.
Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It's easy to see without looking too far that not much is really sacred

Our preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the President of the United States
Sometimes must have to stand naked

"I try my best
To be just like I am
But everybody wants you
To be just like them
They sing while you slave
And I just get bored

Is this going to be a big fight now? :p

I have to confess that I would regard words intended to be accompanied by music differently to words standing alone on a page.
There is a dichotomy there that I'm not one hundred per cent comfortable with?

I have a life.
A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall.

Heard ten thousand whispering and nobody listening. Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughing. Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter.

Well Pinter won the Nobel for playwriting - dialogue which can only have its full impact when performed on stage.

Many winners, even when lucky enough to have superb translators, will not be the same in another language.

Dylan is a monumental cultural figure. Good choice.

Well the last I heard of arab he was stuck on the side of a whale
That was married to the deputy sheriff of the jail
But the funniest thing was as I was leavin' the bay
I saw three ships sailing and they were all headed my way
I asked the captain what his name was an' how come he didn't drive a truck
He said his name was Columbus an' I just said good luck

--Bob Dylan's 115th Dream

Man thinks
’cause he rules the earth
he can do with it
as he please
And if things don’t change soon,
he will
