A Swiss resident Brazillian woman was arrested on arrival to Dublin Airport and sent to Dóchas Women's prison in Mountjoy. Her crime was being suspected of intending to work during her visit. The Gardai later changed their minds and allowed her to stay for 10 days - but understandably she wasn't impressed by the Irish Welcome and immediately left the country.

From the Gardai's point of view - they have a problem. Ireland's immigration and border system is for show only. We have no exit controls, no ID system, no internal checks, no checks at all on our land border. The whole thing is a mess - so the Gardai get one chance only - in Dublin Airport - to catch people abusing our open nation. They have only their personal judgement to go by and will make mistakes.

Question for P.iers - should we have a real immigration system (including exit controls and internal ID checks) or are we happy to continue to pretend?

As I noted on another thread -

For some time, the West German government intended to create a 12-digit personal identification number (Personenkennzeichen, PKZ) for all citizens, registered alien residents on its territory, as well as for all non-resident Nazi victims entitled to compensation payments. The system, which was to be implemented by the 1973 federal law on civil registry, was rejected in 1976, when the Bundestag found the concept of an identification system for the entire population to be incompatible with the existing legal framework

And we are all meant to be good little Germans, aren't we?

Post Brexit we're gonna have to tighten things up... particularly on the border with NI... although then again if we end up maintaining the CTA with the UK while remaining in the EU through some sort of fudge, I haven't a clue how it's proposed we're supposed to manage anything...

We could end up being swamped by both EU and Brit immigration, particularly if the UK economy goes into a slump.

I hope our lot are aware of all this.

What is it about Brazil that every Brazilian I have come across can acquire some dual nationality ?

Most hold Spanish or Italian passports.

Shows how random and illogical our " system " is. First you don't need a visa if you're a Brazilian intending to stay for 90 days, then you get hauled off to jail despite having your intended hosts confirming your status. Pathetic.

Off topic, but always, always, always remember to open any links to the IT in an incognito tab (if using Chrome) or Private browsing in Firefox (if you use internet explorer or edge then you are insane and need professional help) to ensure the IT are not getting subscription revenue.

Sooner they keel over and pass away, the better, hopefully the indo might follow too.

Anyway, apologies for dragging the thread off topic.

The (badly written) Irish Times report makes a brief reference to a habeas corpus application at the High Court being refused.

I'd be interested in knowing the grounds for the refusal, given that presumably her legal representative was afforded the opportunity to present the Judge with the evidence that you (and others) find so convincing!

How do you get by without a PPS number? You must find it difficult, no?

Its more due to Spanish and Italian law, rather than Brazillian law. Millions of Italians moved to Brazil after the war - their grandkids are allowed Italian passports.

Lots of Japanese people with Brazilian passports, globalization is not a new phenomena

Oddly I've never come across a Brazilian with a Portuguese passport.
Would assume they are out there, but just haven't come across any.
Its mainly because fewer Portuguese migrants went to Brazil in the 20th Century, compared to Italians.

How many Irish people work illegally in the US - should all Irish people be therefore thrown in jail on arrival?

Absolutely not.

But the "system" at Dublin Airport clearly isn't working.
