Now it is reported that Christopher Steele, the British ex-spy, sought permission from the British government before he passed on his dossier to the FBI. Downing Street was reportedly informed of the development.Britain dragged into Donald Trump 'dirty dossier' row amid claims Whitehall knew of the file

Now concerns have been expressed that Britain could catch an angry backlash from Trump over its involvement in the smear against him.

Why I fear Britain will pay a lethal price if MI6's meddling with Donald Trump backfires

I'd have thought that they were obliged to inform the US of any allegations in order to let the US investigate. Any failure to pass on information could backfire. The Brits obviously believed that the document wouldn't go public.

When did the UK forward this (unsubstantiated) information to the FBI ?
From the article, it appears not that they passed it on, but that they gave permission to Steele to speak to the FBI.

I always enjoy the Brits fooling themselves about their 'special relationship'.

We now know the dossier was drawn up before the election, which arguably casts further doubt on its credibility.

Non-story.

The real story is that under a deal dating back to 1946, the UK routinely passes intelligence information to the US, and that includes anything it has gathered on Irish citizens through its extensive "listening" network at Cheltenham GCHQ. This will not change after BREXIT.

Read in one of the papers this morning that they informed the FBI last summer, after the first indications came out as part of a "research" contract from a Republican opponent to Trump, but the FBI just seemed obsessed with Hillary's e mails.

Christopher Steele went on looking into it without pay after the Republican Party pulled the funding once Trump got the nomination.

He's now gone into hiding apparently.

Steele is a private self employed individual.
He does not require his governments permission to talk about his work to anybody.

What on earth are you talking about?

Steeles intelligence gathering company Orbis are a private non government company.
Information they gather and collate is shared with their clients.

It has nothing whatever to do with the Brit govt.

Hang on so the neo-Nazi Daily Heil is saying that the One True Relic of former Imperial glory MI6 is engaged in a campaign to drag down the far-right racist President Elect of the US Empire.

But it's all the fault of the evil Lefties?

Former agents routinely inform their former handlers in these circumstances. The security landscape may have changed since they left the service and their intended contact point or sources may no longer be considered safe. In addition, the security services in the UK may have been independently performing their own investigation and it may be more effective if they themselves convey their findings.

One of the articles on the issue today referred to this courtesy which is normally observed by former agents.

As I understand it, Steele made an independent decision to approach British authorities seeking agreement that he provide the dossier to the FBI instead of/as well as those he originally contracted with. He then received confirmation to proceed as proposed. Hence the perceived link to the British government.

The Russian take on it is interesting in that they never consider UK intelligence service agents to be 'ex'. Once an agent for the state always an agent for the state.

He doesn't at all but it makes professional sense to contact them.

Left or Right with the British it makes no difference to the way the British think. Russians = Bond villains, drug cheats ( snigger when you examine the UK sports scene) and a country to be screamed about in a reds under the bed way. They are Cold War programmed on the subject, bringing down Trump would only be a by product of their fixation with casting the Russians as baddies.
