Britain is the best and we're big eejits in Ireland for leaving the UK! There, I said it. Now let's change the flag, abolish the national anthem and bury Irish for good.

Strangely, the Telegraph said Ireland came below the UK

Only Ireland fares worse than Britain in an updated quality of life index for Europe compiled by uSwitch.com, as the republic has fewer hours of sunshine, a higher retirement age and lower public spending on essential services.
British Isles 'worst place to live in Europe' - Telegraph

It's what we get for decades of concentrating on personal greed ahead of general quality of life. The same probably applies in the UK too.

There are people on this website and in the media who seem to take masochistic pleasure in knocking Ireland and the Irish people. Some of these people even question Ireland's independence. Lets just see how our neighbor is doing.
And there are enough people on this website who seem to take pathetic pleasure in knocking Britain and the British people.

I would suggest that we take a long hard look at ourselves and the social and economic vandalism inflicted on this country by Zanu FF before we try to seek to mitigate that by looking elsewhere.

The link you have posted states "Only Ireland fares worse than Britain in an updated quality of life index for Europe compiled by uSwitch.com, as the republic has fewer hours of sunshine, a higher retirement age and lower public spending on essential services"

If England was worse than Ireland why would so many of our young people be heading in that direction again ?

PS: It's spelt Neighbour ....

Selective measures. Is your life worse because you retire later (and consequently earn more money until later in life). Is your life worse because you are taxed less and decide how you spend your money (rather than having it taken from you in tax and given to a health service you may nevcer use)?

This should be "Britain is the least socialist place in Europe".

One thing I do agree on; our weather is ************************e (and even worse in Ireland than in the U.K.).

So what is your logic, as long as there is someone worse off in the UK we are fine? That sad inward looking approach is by and large why we are on the verge of bankruptcy. We think we know and are better than everyone else, and we ignore our real strenghts.

I have lived in both coutries extensively and I can tell you the UK is no worse than Ireland to live in. Parts of the UK and Ireland are dreadful and always have been, but in a recession there are more safety nets in the UK than here.

Ireland is no picnic for many people now and we have very low levels of public safety nets to catch those in trouble.

See this is part of what's wrong with Ireland. This monomaniacal obsession with Britain.

Britain is a fecking kip, an atrociously run country that is horrible for ordinary people trying to get by in.

Just because Britain is also a shytehole does not in any way excuse the appalling mismanagement, waste, corruption, and outright scammery that characterises Ireland.

While Official D'Ireland peers fearfully at bloody Britain, I think you'll find most of the well-known and informed "doomers" are actually comparing and contrasting Irish governance, industrial policy and general cultural attitude to commerce with countries like say the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, South Korea etc.

"Ah shure we're a feckless bunch of eejits but we're not as bad as dem Brits". Pathetic bogman servility and chronically low standards and expectations. Would ye ever all get a feckin clue before your country is taken away from you (if it's not too late for that already!)

We take a masochistic pleasure in knocking Ireland and the Irish people, you say. And you provide us with a link to a British website knocking Britain.

So the Brits are just the same as us?

Hmm....

Maybe we should team up?

You dont get the whole social contract idea do you? Life at the end of the day is not all about how much money is in your pocket. I would rather live in a society where everyone was a little bit less well off but where you are guaranteed to be looked after if you get sick or god forbid keith you get hit by a bus on the way home from work today.
A socirety where I can retire at 65 on a little bit less if I want to but spend more time with my family. I am happy to let people work till 80 if they want to be rich.
The obsession some people have with making as much money as possible and then saying ************************ you world I aint paying for hospitals cos I dont need one!

So we are all a little worse off but can afford to retire earlier? How does that work?

Life at the end of the day is not all about how much money is in your pocket.
Is it about how much you can take from someone else's pocket.

And I prefer to live in a country that let's ME decide how I want to spend my money. If you tax me less, I can buy health insurance if I'm worried about being run over by a bus.

I see no problem working until 68 or 70 if needbe. If I have the skills and desire to work, why should I be forced into sitting at home?

The idea that people being forced retiring at 60 is somehome "better" than allowing people to work later in life is frankkly ridiculous.

And meanwhile in France, which is trying to cathch-up with the hole they've created. You get this going on......

+1000 on every point

Have also lived in both and made my decision to live here despite most of my family being over there. Things pretty bad here but the prospect of raising my family in England repulses me.

The UK is OK if you have a good income and dreadful if you don't but that is the tale the world over. France has its own problems.

Life in the Shires or the more affluent leafy suburbs is very pleasant. IMO the UK is on the road to recovery after 13 years of waste and over spending. It is in Ireland's interest for UK recovery and the equally true the other way round. Both enjoy moderate climates. Many in Spain would tell you that there is a lot to be said for rain. Is life in Luxembourg or Marseille or Napoli really much better?

In fairness to the state by outlawing competition it keeps the number of buses down. It's not very green but it decreases your chances of being hit by one.
