CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA TOOK 50M FACEBOOK USERS' DATA—AND BOTH COMPANIES OWE ANSWERS

CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA, A data analysis firm that worked on President Trump's 2016 campaign, and its related company, Strategic Communications Laboratories, pilfered data on 50 million Facebook users and secretly kept it, according to two reports in The New York Times and The Guardian. The apparent misuse of Facebook data—and the social media giant's failure to police it—leave both companies with plenty still to answer for.

Facebook has suspended both Cambridge and SCL while it investigates whether both companies retained Facebook user data that had been provided by third-party researcher Aleksandr Kogan of the company Global Science Research, a violation of Facebook's terms.
Facebook suspends data firm Cambridge Analytica which has Trump ties

Steve Bannon was a former VP of CA. And somewhere in there the Mercers are involved apparently.

Channel 4 are doing an expose on it for the next while.

Whistleblower reveals to Channel 4 News data grab of 50 million Facebook profiles by Cambridge Analytica – data firm linked to Trump win

The British data firm described as “pivotal” in Donald Trump’s presidential victory was behind a ‘data grab’ of more than 50 million Facebook profiles, a whistleblower has revealed to Channel 4 News.
It is also being connected with RUSSIA and TRUMP and all that. And with BREXIT ..

So BIG DATA under the spot light ...

This is a HUGE part of how Trump ended up in the White House; this microtargeting made it possible to tailor propaganda to individuals. In the end, it massively magnified the effects of the Russian attacks (hacking + emails) and probably tipped the election.

Disinfo is tailored to specific characteristics in a way that ordinary propaganda can't be; it's carpet bombing vs GPS cruise missile.

Cambridge Analytica, for its part, claims to have 500 data points on 50 million Americans. From likes, follows, etc.

This makes it possible to build an OCEAN profile (5-factor personality model) for individuals to identify their preferences and weaknesses.

Russian disinfo was micro-targeted to specific individuals based on their personal interests and psychological traits.

And Face Book which made billions off ordinary peoples needs to stay in touch with family and friends, worked with Cambridge Analytica on the Alamo Project, headed by Parscale, Trumps digital media manager.

Zuckerberg cares about his privacy and no one elses.

This is the future of agriculture, people.

Everything you browse, say, do or purchase online and whenever you have a smartphone with you is being harvested.

Everything!

Wake up sheeple! It is time to take a stand. It is time to make your voices heard. It is time to get Wenger out!

Is the real news here that FB had to be "seen to be doing something" ?

I am not on Facebook. And I do not recommend it.

FACEBOOK IS A COMPLETE AND UTTER WASTE OF YOUR TIME.

I'm on Facebook but under a false name. I recommend that approach. If Cambridge Analytica were harvesting details off that account they are definitely going to end up with a lot weird data somewhere in the pile.

And no I don't give a f*ck about Facebook's desire for everyone to be on their database under their real name.

No. HRC was sh!te. And it not necessary to hire any consulting organization. An objective assessment of HRC tells.

The Cambridge Analytica Debacle is not a Facebook “Data Breach.” Maybe It Should Be.

The cliché goes that humans are the weakest link in cybersecurity, and potentially even the leading cause for the majority of cybersecurity incidents in recent years. This debacle demonstrates that cliché to its full extent. But there is a deeper question here – why are our current data breach notification laws creating this dichotomy between active breaches, where hackers penetrate a database and obtain valuable data, and passive breaches, where humans are being tricked into passing that data into unauthorized hands? After all, the result is the same – users’ private data is compromised.

.... This is a call to amend our current data breach notification laws to encompass personal data obtained through social engineering as a recognized form of data breach.

.... It is up to states to make this happen, because the boilerplate corporate “we care about your privacy” announcements are not working.
Trump campaign, HRC campaign, Brexit etc are to an extent a side show item in this? I think the bigger thing is described above & in general, inside that article?

well the US is so f*cked at this stage it doesn't actually matter whether HRC or that other clown is president.

No one gets near that job unless they have reached an accomodation with the people who actually run the place.

Well people gave their data away freely, but they did not know for what purpose. That was never made clear to them.

Zuckerberg has been stupid and arrogant enough to think he's got a PR problem, when in reality he has a legal train headed his way with such momentum there's no way he'll be able to spin this story into a "two sides controversy" or successful defence.

It doesn’t matter what Facebook terms & conditions say: this seizure of private social media data for the purpose of microtargeting Trump propaganda is a seizure of Americans’ personal, political & informational sovereignty.

.. Whether or not anyone is fully aware of this, the fact remains this massive ID fraud carried out by Cambridge Analytica, once it became part of Trump advertising, was an illegal campaign donation.

.. If anyone involved in the Cambridge Analytica ID theft scheme to help Trump knew they were working in concert with Kremlin psy ops, they are then part of a military cyber attack on the United States. Expect them to be indicted by Mueller & compelled to testify.

The thing is This wasn't a "breach" or a hack. This was using FB's API EXACTLY AS IT WAS DESIGNED TO BE USED. The "platform policy" is a fig leaf.

All you have to do on FB is check that box saying "Yes I allow this [stupid app to pass my friend a virtual beer or whatever] to access my personal information" and you're meat, along with all your FB friends, for whichever anonymous person created that app.

Further, there is no way to appeal to FB to make them delete any information they may have gathered on you. You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

You are FBs product. This goes beyond the evil Russians and Parscale.

Cambridge Analytica: links to Moscow oil firm and St Petersburg university

Aleksandr Kogan, the Cambridge University academic who orchestrated the harvesting of Facebook data, had previously unreported ties to a Russian university, including a teaching position and grants for research into the social media network, the Observer has discovered. Cambridge Analytica, the data firm he worked with – which funded the project to turn tens of millions of Facebook profiles into a unique political weapon – also attracted interest from a key Russian firm with links to the Kremlin.

Energy firm Lukoil, which is now on the US sanctions list and has been used as a vehicle of government influence, saw a presentation on the firm’s work in 2014. It began with a focus on voter suppression in Nigeria, and Cambridge Analytica also discussed “micro-targeting” individuals on social media during elections.

Facebook has links to CIA too. Even worse, Bono and U2 are also involved. :)
