Things hotting up or just empty bluster?

Source: AFP, Tanjug BRUSSELS -- Catalan European Parliament members caused a storm in Spain Wednesday when they sought EU's intervention over what they said was a military threat from Madrid.

Four MEPs stated in a letter to Brussels that the country's authorities threatened the northeastern region where demands are growing for independence.
"We are writing to you to convey our deep concern over a series of threats of the use of military force against the Catalan population," they wrote to European Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding.

Considering the Spanish government ran death squads against the Basque opposition I wouldn't put anything past them.

This has been going on for some time now. Disgusting behaviour by the Spanish regime. The way they've gone about keeping their rotten kingdom together with force is truly shocking, especially their treatment of the Basque people. Hopefully Catalonia will rise as a fellow free nation soon, along with the other occupied nations of Iberia.

Of course Franco but alsso under the so-called Socialist government of González in the 1980s and 1990s.
They are Socialists....nothing wrong with that...

they are also Spanish Nationalists and I hold no truck with Nationalaists of any colour but to suggest that they were somehow involved in criminal activity against their own citizens does not hold water...

I agree the Basques were militant but they were also Communist Militants.....

As for the Catalonians????

I'll beleive it when I see it.... a call for a fully independent state.

no...I reckon a form of Basque Autonomy will be fine for them...

The Spainish are a very diverse people with a very diverse history but they do tend to stick together when threatened.....

the Barcalona V Madrid battle is centuries old.......

It will continue for a few centuries more , I think..

A Spanish General was placed under house arrest around 6 years ago, when he threatened military action if the Govt ceded more autonomy to Catalonia.
This was under Zapatero.
This Catalan project will end in tears and blood.

Why should it end in violence? If the democratic will of the people of Catalonia is recognised and accepted that should be the end of the matter. They are not some enclave, like Kosovo, they are a defined nation state, with a language widely spoken (not by a minority in a subsidised backwater, but throughout the country, every day, everywhere), a shared history and a common goal. Catalonia would be a strong and self sufficient country immediately, with virtually no assistance needed, financially or militarily. However, should Spain raise the spectre of facism again, and threaten violence to force the Catalans to stay Spanish, the EU and NATO should kick them out and transfer all support to the victims of aggression.

There is alot of unopen and bitter wounds left from the civil war and the Franco era. Unlike in Greece, Spain never had an open and honest discussion on this part of her history. Much like post war Yugoslavia, it was all hushed up and suppressed in the hope that it would go away. Well it appears that seperatism has reawakened after a long slumber.
