Well after WW2, Germany had to be de-Nazified. It looks like Ireland will have to be de-FFuked. Until that happens, this kind of cronyism will keep happening.

If Cowen was serious about running this country he would scrap this agency, but he wont. He's not different to haughey + ahern.

Plus ça change...

Before you solve a problem you must admit to having one. These clowns are in deep denial. Speaking of deep - when you're in a hole stop digging!

If you people think that cronyism is the sole preserve of FF, then you have very short memories.
Anythig older than 11 years doesn't really matter!

There must be a long list of Bert's friends in high places. I'll start one:

  1. Joe Burke
  2. Celia Larkin
  3. Liam Lawlor
Anyone else?

The most likely reaction by Biffo and FF will be to reduce the powers of FoI further, they consider it to be a pain in the ass.

For those of you who care about the waste of your money, make a complaint about being ripped off to the consumer agency, I've done it and i suggest others do the same

Submit a Consumer Complaint

I agree, all these so called regulatory agencies, and particularly the 'self regulatory' ones, must be scraped and the responsbilbity reverted to the relevent Minister. I have posted before about the scandal of the mobile phone 'subscription service' rip off and the ease with which this could be stopped, but RegTel who are supposed to regulate the cowboys just sit back and do nothing because the cowboys are paying their wages.
BTW, warn the kids that MTV is currently saturated with ads for a phone 'watchdog' a 'fart sound' etc and these are obviously targeting youngsters, they need to be told that if they respond to any of these ads, they will have €10 taken out of their call credit EACH WEEK thereafter and will not receive anything of value in return It is almost legailised theft. But that is the level to which the business sector in this country has descended to.

This particular law is only adhered to when it suits. There are widespread breaches. This is only the latest.
e.g. the way the contracts for storage of e-voting machines were allocated.
whats the threshold for these contracts to go on the EU tenders list?

If a contract that should have been put to tender has not been put to tender is this a matter for SIPO ? The minister with responisbility for this should be made answer some questions ?

Here we go again, in real countries this would be a major scandal, but we have become so desensitised to FF and their nepotism/corruption this is the norm.

The national consumer agency gave a PR contract to a company liked to a senior FF member, Martin Mackin.

It seems Larkin proposed the firm for the job and that it was not put out to tender, which is should have been.

Celia backed firm with FF links for €200,000 contract - National News, Frontpage - Independent.ie
To be fair, he is a FORMER, senior FF figure. He was the Secretary General after Pat Farrell. His company happen to be very good but, one can only imagine the brass neck of Celia proposing the award of the contract. The optics are all wrong.

Additionally, I would be careful about intimating that the contract was not put to tender. It would be normal practice that the preferred tender is put to the vote at a Board meeting. That could well be what happened here.

Whatever about who got the contract, why on earth does the NCA need to spend €8.3k a month on PR??? (€200k/24 months). That's €276 a day, every day, for 2 years. And who exactly are the "public" they are "relating" to? Presumably not consumers interacting with the NCA as those contacts would have to be done in-house. So the PR must be for other stuff - media, corporate to corporate (??)...erm, I dunno.

Is there any kind of audit or at least timesheets of the work done for that money?
