The Irish news yesterday, led with the release of "Charlie One", in which a cork born former member of British military intelligence lifts the lid on some of their exploits.

Cork born former British soldier tried to join the IRA - The Irish News

Among the things alleged are:

That Johnny Adair was saved from death by the unit, despite wanting him dead - inferring that he was an intelligence asset;
That the unit bungled the monitoring of an attack which led to the death of David Caldwell;
The bugging of Raymond McCartney was only discovered after they left an intelligence file on his kitchen table;
And that the deaths of the two corporals at the funeral of Kevin Brady was as a result of one of the officers "showboating";

What is interesting in the articles is two things - a statement that collateral damage is acceptable to British military intelligence and that after the killings of the two corporals, personnel were advised not to fire a warning shot in a similar situation, but to "take aim and make it count".

Surprised this has yet to be mentioned on the forum.

The notion that Howes and Woods " inadvertently strayed" into a IRA funeral was always one of British intelligence greater fairytale.
The notion that they stepped in to prevent the assassination of Johnny Adair's because his eight year old daughter was with him on her way to school is laughable.
Everyone was expendable if it suited their agenda.

That was pretty much the sub text of the book, as far as I could see.

Indeed it is. Have you read it? Assuming you have, what's your opinion regarding acceptable collateral damage in British military intelligence operations?
A non shinner leaving out claims that two current MLA's are agents? Moi is shacked...

Nope haven't read it, did you read it before posting your op?
You may find them acceptable, but I doubt the families would, Brit intelligent like all the players have many questions to answer but I doubt they will...

Well you'll be shacked to hear I agree that there is no acceptable level of collateral damage, whatever the context.
