I do like the Chinese naming conventions. Love the 'Jade Rabbit' name for their lunar rover.

The implications are interesting for one of the Great Leap Forward projects currently under way for the Irish nation as well, y'know.

Should the Chinese decide that the dark side of the moon is a great place for a Massive Bronze Badger with Clockwork Moving Ears then they could quite easily launch the parts and assemble them over time via robots.

We will have missed our launch window. I must contact the Chinese Embassy. They won't want to miss this opportunity and if the sullen continuing silence on the MBBWCME project from the Irish Government goes on much longer I'm afraid the Committee will have to explore all other options with our intellectual property.

Imagine if you were a scouting ship approaching our solar system from some space-faring race and during your scans of the system you detected a Massive Bronze Badger with Clockwork Moving Ears on the side of the moon facing your craft you'd fairly seriously want to report it and put out a 'caution' message back home. Probably with the words 'whoah, feckin' hell look at THIS!' included somewhere in all the digital beeps.

So there are implications for the defence of our solar system on top of everything else.

Wonder what names we will eventually use in the Irish space programme. 'The Wild Irish Lunar Rover' would be good. Orbital station 'Isn't Dinny Great Altogether Though'.

The Lunar Lander being 'Down With This Sort of Thing'.

It's a great step forward and may well reveal through better technology a lot more than the Apollo missions, which were far too focused on landing a human on the surface. Probes and rovers are better. They don't sell stamps and coins and other tat. They don't even expect to come back!

As a piece of science, this is to be welcomed.

And there would be absolutely nothing wrong with the Chinese Moonbase. However, a joint Chinese-Japanese-Indian-European-US-Whatever Moonbase would be even better.

Space has been one place where effective international co-operation has worked. Science in general works as a successful collective human enterprise (e.g. climate science, weather forecasting).

We need more international co-operation, not less. Perhaps the Chinese becoming serious players in space is an opportunity to do that.

On the negative side, international rivalry to exploit resources on the Moon, like minerals, needs to be avoided. There is a fore taste of this going on here on Earth, as a shrinking Arctic lends itself to exploitation, and possibly a shrinking Antarctic also.
The US is the one that does not want any cooperation with China and barred its scientists from cooperate with their Chinese counterparts. The US stopped China from joining the International Space Station effort. China has no choice but running a space program on her own.

It was all shot in a movie studio just outside Hangzhou.

Exactly. A grassy knoll outside Hangzhou.

The Dark Side guff is just so the US cannot verify the scam using their telescopes - the giveaway is that it isn't 'dark' at all in the images.
"There is no dark side of the moon really. Matter of fact it's all dark."

I like how the Chinese space agency logo in the corner is the star trek logo
