So now religious orders have to sell off parts of school to fund the redress scheme.

Great. Now the schools system will be damaged.

Why is this let happen? Do the Christian Brothers not have other assets to sell off? I know they made a fortune selling off their HQ on the NCR in Dublin 7. A fine old building which shouldn't have been knocked down by the way. (A separate issue of course)

The Christian Brothers should have nothing to do with public education in this state.

If Scientologists had been found committing a fraction of the offences carried out by the CB's or Catholic Church, they would have been unceremoniously broken up and thrown out.
We then would have been lectured on the evils of religious cults.

The state needs to CPO Church owned schools in lieu of the redress.

If you think the Catholic Church has lost it's ability to influence power, then you're blind.

13% of redress scheme cost paid so far - C&AG report

The Catholic religious congregations who ran residential institutions where children were abused have paid just 13% of the costs of a redress scheme set up to help survivors, according to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General published by the Department of Education.

The report states that by the end of 2015 the total costs of the commission which inquired into the child abuse, and the Redress Scheme, were an estimated €1.5bn.

Minister for Education Richard Bruton has expressed disappointment with the contribution from the religious orders and said progress has actually gone into reverse.

To date the 18 religious congregations have offered the equivalent of about 23% of the overall cost. However, just 13% of the overall cost has actually been handed over.

Look at the date on that report !
This can only occur when influence exists.

If you don't want them to sell off assets, how do you think they should pay what's due?

Obviously a logical conclusion - concluded. The Brothers need the cash to pay off the cost in the redress scheme which they agreed to. It's their property, they can do what they like with it.

The Christian Brothers should have nothing to do with public education in this state.
You're about 150 years too late.

It is a bit confusing - is it the Order selling off assets - assets chosen to garner sympathy - or is it the Trust? Or is the Trust just a subsection of the Christian Brothers? If it is a separate entity, do these sort of trusts enjoy the same safeguards as were given to the religious in Bunreacht?

Exactly. The Church and its Orders and various "subsidiaries" are continuing to act as far from what they are supposed to be teaching and practicing (Christianity, charity, love, empathy etc etc), basically, the Word and Will of God, as they could possibly be. All that bolloxology from the apologists on threads such as the national maternity hospital thread has a light shone on it by this action of the CB's.

Fvcking w@nkers.

This is all another example of how the Church and its various orders and sects have no charitable purpose at their core and such designation by the Revenue Commissioners should be revoked.

These are their only assets? I thought they were now the Trust's assets .....
You want to dictate which assets are sold?
