Who is Peter flannigan? What is it with sf kicking out and then bringing back members in what appears to be numerous cases.

I had the best laugh in ages when someone told me today the Mike McKee's election agent is Peter Flannigan - all the renegades are galloping back to the fold. So much for the 'new, young, vibrant' SF - more a case of Mike stepped out and Peter stepped in again (over a 20 year period).

(and for Eric's information above - there is no Town Council election - it was abolished - about 1,000 votes will be needed to be in the mix for a seat).

If sf are happy to take FF and labour party members then unlikely to be unhappy welcoming back some of their own.

If Mike McKee's 6th May statement on FB regarding another candidate is true, I doubt it very much.

Seems to have been a lot of small scale sabotage against him. That allegation plus some stuff about one of their election billboards.

I don't have facebook. Can you repeat it here or is it legally dubious?
Here is Mike's post from the 6th of May last:

I must say I'm extremely disappointed in a particular election candidate , who, when announcing his/her intention of running in the elections made a publicised comment committing to running a 'clean' campaign. This person, at the weekend having asked a resident would they vote for them, and being told that no, they were voting Sinn Fein, the same candidate proceeded to claim that I was 'dangerous' and that I attempted to run them off the road a few days previously. Knowing this person from past, it has not surprised me, but let me say this, making such false comments is known as slander and is illegal. The person it was said to is prepared to stand up and repeat what was said and by whom. I hope this post gets back to the so-called 'clean' campaigner, because if it, or anything else is said that is lies, I will sue the person for slander. Mike McKee

CATHY MCCAFFERTY and Mike McKee are both on the local radio right now in the debates. Sitting right beside each other it seems. She was asked about her expulsion from the party and she refused to discuss it and when Mike was asked why she was kicked out he said he did not know as he was not a member at the time: He then said he left the party but rejoined a number of years ago because problems he had have been removed......... Was cathy the problem?

Mike was never in the party when Cathy was. He left many years ago before SF even had any official structure in Clare. Cathy was part of a group which founded the structure that is there today back in the 90's. Mike had stopped participating years prior to that.

Breaking news..... Sinn Fein have dumped O'Reilly.... or he has jumped...
Proper order, hard to believe that they let him get as far as his name on the ballot paper.

Just found this on Facebook - Sinn Féin Ireland

We condemn the comments in the strongest possible terms.

These comments are completely unacceptable and not what we expect from Sinn Féin candidates or members.

We have accepted Cathal O’Reilly’s resignation today since these remarks have come to light and we believe that it was the right thing for him to do.

He is no longer a Sinn Féin member and is not a Sinn Féin candidate but unfortunately he will appear as such on the ballot paper as it is too late to change that.

If he is elected we will be asking him to resign his seat.

His resignation letter is below:

"In the last two days, anti-traveller comments have been attributed to me. I did make those comments. It was three years ago and I am deeply ashamed of them now. I should not have made them. I’m sure none of us are proud of everything we ever said or did in our lives. Being in Sinn Féin has taught me a lot over the past few years and human rights and respect for ALL people are some of those things. It is something I should not have had to learn. While I no longer hold such views, the fact that I previously held them has been publicised now and this has caused embarrassment to me, my family and to Sinn Féin. Because of this, I offered my resignation to the party earlier today and it has been accepted. I now wish to move on with my life as a private citizen."

Taking that statement at face if he's distanced himself from previous attitudes and is now more educated he shouldn't be resigning or be disowned by the party.

It reminds me of a screen grab of some of the Flegger Facebook pages that LAD specialise in taking the pi55 out of. Spelling and all. They probably wanted to crush the story, as a story, in the teeth of the election. Whether reeducated or not, the timing of its appearance ensured the action taken.

The structure you refer led to many long standing SF supporters leaving or being excluded. It was divisive and caused many more problems than it solved. I personally know people that tried to join and they had many problems, which eventually led to them giving up. This was in the day Cathy McCafferty was still involved.
However that is now history and in recent times SF in Clare has been in complete disarray. Some Republicans in Ennis were not aware of Cathal O'Reilly and from the mess that has now occured it seems that SF in Clare did not know too much about him either. Likewise Republicans in the West/North Clare had never heard of Noeleen (?) Moran until she was announced as a candidate. I know people living in the area who have had SF leaflets for Europe but nothing for the locals.
Seems like SF in Clare need a root and branch sort out. They need to speak to everyone as there are some long standing issues and these need to be resolved. Otherwise it is like putting a plaster over an open sore that keeps festering.

I'm hearing that the clare branch a seeking to bring back members who walked last year in an effort to give the party the right direction. They had been on a some what of a high in 09 and 10 so why did they loose their way. Have the people with common sense left in the last two or three years
