No, this is not a joke...

In one paper Professor Kevin Anderson, Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, said the only way to reduce global emissions enough, while allowing the poor nations to continue to grow, is to halt economic growth in the rich world over the next twenty years.

This would mean a drastic change in lifestyles for many people in countries like Britain as everyone will have to buy less ‘carbon intensive’ goods and services such as long haul flights and fuel hungry cars.

Prof Anderson admitted it “would not be easy” to persuade people to reduce their consumption of goods

He said politicians should consider a rationing system similar to the one introduced during the last “time of crisis” in the 1930s and 40s.

This could mean a limit on electricity so people are forced to turn the heating down, turn off the lights and replace old electrical goods like huge fridges with more efficient models. Food that has travelled from abroad may be limited and goods that require a lot of energy to manufacture.

The Second World War and the concept of rationing is something we need to seriously consider if we are to address the scale of the problem we face,” he said.

Prof Anderson insisted that halting growth in the rich world does not necessarily mean a recession or a worse lifestyle, it just means making adjustments in everyday life such as using public transport and wearing a sweater rather than turning on the heating.

Anderson might be better understood if his real position is examined rather than a distortion in thet "Torygraph."

This is from an article in the New Statesman last year. He does not call for any rationing but simply explains a few truths about economic activity related to CO2 emissions.

"Perhaps an economic collapse can save us by reducing emissions? After all, the reason the oil price is falling is that people are consuming less fossil energy. But according to Kevin Anderson and Alice Bows of Manchester University’s Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, the collapse would have to be profound indeed to be sufficient on its own to bring about the emissions decline the planet needs. They estimate that in order to have even a 50-50 chance of keeping global temperatures from rising above 2° higher than pre-industrial levels (the stated aim of EU policy, among many others), the world must see energy-related carbon emissions peak by 2015 and decline thereafter by between 6 and 8 per cent per year. Anderson and Bows remind us that while “the collapse of the former Soviet Union’s economy brought about annual emissions reductions of over 5 per cent for a decade”, that still isn’t quite enough. The suggestion is not that we should aim for a Soviet-style economic implosion, but that the dramatic cuts in carbon emissions needed to avoid catastrophic climate change are still politically and economically inconceivable."

Another thread based on a "story" in the Torygraph?

Well, that's the Torygraph for you .... believe it if you wish. The Torygraph's record of lying about climate scientists is second only to Faux News.

I'd check around if I were you. Not worth talking about.
Is this incorrect?

“Peak warming is determined by the total amount of carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere, not the rate we release it in any given year”

And this?

'Many people think that the reason why emissions need to peak soon is to save the climate of the 22nd century, but our research highlights a more immediate reason. We need to start cutting emissions soon to avoid potentially dangerous rates of warming within our lifetimes, and to avoid committing ourselves to potentially unfeasible rates of emission reduction in a couple of decade's time.'

And this?

“The study also points out that the problem of water scarcity in most river basins will be made worse if warming proceeds more rapidly and large climate impacts coincide with a peak in world population.”

Where is truth?

We have had Fascism and Communism, now welcome to Greenism. When are people going to realise the planet was warmer now than in the middle ages!

Also how did we come out of the last ice age? Global warming is not a man made phenomena, it is the same natural warming up and cooling down of our planet that has existed for millions of years.
Given all the information that is available about Climate Change: much of which has been presented on these threads. your post is as bizarre as the libertarian rhetoric in general.

Let's be clear.

You claim that Kevin Anderson did not say or write what he was quoted as saying?

Given that the most credible information available on these threads relates to proponents for socialist policies (rationing for all), data manipulationg, academic fraud, scientist activists, "hiding" inconvenient trends and general all round lying that post is far from bizarre.

I posted, Tombo, a response to the Anderson smear. I showed, Tombo, what Anderson does say and it is not the spin that the "Rag" gives.

Did you read it?

You cretin.

You posted a quote to claim that last year Anderson wasn't mentioning rationing.

Well guess what tudbrain? We are discussing what he is saying right now. Today he has promoted the idea of rationing.

No he has not. Spin it how you will.

And, if you do much more of that kind of insulting, I will give you a lesson in the art. You are an amateur with a very limited range and a very childish idea of how it is done.

lol, talk about being a bit simple. Have you never even read anything about climate change? Maybe you have. The shell book of the climate for dummies.
