Remember buying the Observer just for his TV criticism.

He was a gentleman of bright wit and good humour. His company was a warm refuge for the sane. He'll be okay.

Eddie Mair read out a poem of his about his granddaughter's gift of a Japanese Maple this year to him.

All he had to do he reckoned was to live long enough to see it in its Autumn colour.

He made it just about.

Understated unassuming warm and very witty man.

Very sad news.
His writing and TV were such a part of my childhood.
Actually googled him this morning to check if he was still alive and was happy to see his wiki say he was. Unfortunately it was not so.
Lasted a nice dollop of years beyond his terminal prognosis though, which is always great.

Some good chuckles there.
