Evening Echo — Cork councillor in court on drink-driving charge

A bit of everything in this Court report by Mary Smithwick.

"Garda Killian Barry told the court he and Garda Shay Lyons were operating a checkpoint in Ballymacoda in East Cork’s main street at 12.35am as the  car approached. It stopped, then suddenly turned left away from the checkpoint about 50 metres away. There was a screech of tyres as the car drove off and the gardaí went in pursuit in the patrol car.
After making a number of turns, the car entered the car park of the local church and entered onto the grass area. Garda Barry said a male got out of the car and began to run.

He said he shouted at the male to stop but he failed to do so. Garda Barry said he gave chase for close to 150 metres. The man turned into a garden of a derelict house and hid in a bush. The man identified himself as Michael Hegarty and said he was a public representative. He told Garda Barry  he had consumed a “few drinks” on the night, including two in the local greyhound track and two whiskies in a local bar. He told gardaí he had been stupid to drive after agreeing to bring a friend home."

Adjourned to consider the legal submissions, and resumes on the Ides of March.

Is he a member of a political party? Disgusting behavior (would make a great comedy skit all the same) .

Bloody idiot.

Trying to hide in a bush is very funny though.

Someone who must remain nameless had a string of charges laid against him and the state we're dragging their heels producing the book of evidence. The judge told the state to produce the book of evidence at the next hearing or risk all the charges being thrown out. On the night prior to the court hearing, the accused got it into his head that the book of evidence was in a particular Garda station - which must remain nameless - and that all he had to do was break in and steal it and the judge would throw out all charges against him. He did in fact successfully break in, but was unable to find the book of evidence, so he decided the only thing to do was burn down the entire station. He left the station and proceeded to an all night petrol station where he bought a few quids worth of petrol in a borrowed container - from the petrol station - and returned to the Garda station to burn it down. he was inside sloshing the petrol around when he noticed a garda car pull up outside and a number of gards jumped out and rushed in - the garage attendant had become suspicious and called them. He escaped via a window and was chased around the locality for a while before he was discovered hiding - yes you guessed it - in a bush. True story.
