If you avoid prison, your chances of an honorary degree from an Irish University are excellent.
We can expect Lowry to get a Doctor of Laws soon.

Nice to see an objective, open-minded, unbiased original post, with similar comments to follow ...

Well, almost.

Clearly those here present fail to recognise that these 'honorary degrees' bring more credit to the awarding institution than they bestow on the honoured. However, they do give others, who worked for and deserve the real thing, the opportunity to glad-hand with such 'names', and doubtless get a selfie.

For the record, Mrs Clinton — in addition to her 'earned' degrees from Wellesley College and Yale — has honorary ones from:
  • University of Arkansas (Little Rock);
  • University of Pennsylvania;
  • Mount St Vincent University (*);
  • University of Ulster;
  • Agnes Scott College (*);
  • University of Gothenburg;
  • New York University;
  • Yale;
  • University of St Andrews;
  • Swansea University;
  • and counting

Fact: once one achieves status of 'Alumnus'/ 'Alumna', the regular begging circular isn't long delayed.

One reason why Irish and UK (other than Oxbridge) universities are falling down those specious league tables derives from their lack of 'endowments'. Harvard seems to be the richest of them all: something upwards of $36 billion, which amounts to $1¾ million for each enrolled student (per-capita, Princetonians and Yale-birds are even better resourced).

So Taidhg Gaelach makes a fair point: if it brings the odd million or two to Trinity, who's complaining?

On the other hand, the real sport is when a university resiles on its intended invitation: back in January 1985 the Congregation of Oxford University (i.e. its alumni) refused Margaret Thatcher an honorary degree. Oh, how we chortled.
