Could the UK ever have withstood an attack by Russia?

The English are stuck in a time warp post-Brexit and are now worrying themselves about being unable to 'withstand and attack by Russia'.

Of course they cannot. In a nuclear age, even the concept of 'withstanding' an attack is silly. No one would be around after to award medals. The 1980's movie Threads gives a fairly realistic scenario for a UK-Russia war.

But was this ever true? Was the UK military ever in a position to withstand an attack by Russia? And if so when was that? Certainly not in the last 80 years or so. 1905? Perhaps. In the Crimean war it took a coalition of France, UK, Sardinia and Turkey to defeat Russia in a very local conflict.

Traditionally the UK has preferred to be a Russian allay, or to fight it covertly by funding terrorism (Afghanistan and Central Asia from the 1850's onward. Chechnya from the 1790's on) which is a sign that the UK never felt confident to face Russia directly. Indeed any western european power that ever tried to face Russia directly has met an unfortunate end.

If the Russians invaded the UK now they'd have their asses handed to them.

Why would The Ruskies/Chinese bother attacking them?
Nuclear weapons are merely anachronistic vanity projects for the likes of Britain and France!

Why in the name of hell would Russia attack the UK? Both would be destroyed in a nuclear wasteland (and us and most of Europe also).

NATO hasn't gone away you know.

Indeed why would anyone invade the UK. There are no natural resources there to control. Its not a strategic location. The only things of value Russia wants in the UK are apartments in Chelsea and the UK is happy to provide them.

What's up with this disgusting, anti Russian sentiment, amongst some western people? The Russians should be our fecking allies, the cold ended twenty odd years ago

All Europeans have a new enemy to contend with and it's called Islam, and guess what? It doesn't hate the British/Germans and French any less than it hates the Russians, it despises all who don't bow to it's whim.

An alliance with Putin is crucial to Europe's survival, because right now he's only European leaders whose fighting the bastards.

They should be friends. It is the fault of Putin and his cronies that we are not.

In a conventional war the UK can't defeat 20000 tanks with 400. On the other hand NATO matches Russia in airpower.

Your conspiracy theory about the UK involvement in Chechnya belongs in the same dustbin of history as the Dulles Plan.

The UK would be annihilated by just the conventional warfare element.

The KA-50's would hammer the UK armed forces.

How are the Russians going to get 20000 tanks onto UK soil?

Exactly. That's one of the reasons they can't be deemed a Superpower. They can't project their power effectively.

Like China, you can have the biggest army but it means nothing if they can't go anywhere.

secularism and climate change are 2 bigger threats. Secularism is family breakdown, divorce, abortion and so on. Climate change is rising sea level, flooding, droughts and water shortages.

The Russians would hardly of been able to invade the UK around 1900 considering they couldn't defeat Japan (who were far behind the European powers in terms of military power)

There is definitely an enemy in common. Western Europe still hasn't faced up to the Muslim problem.
