Austrian lawmakers vote to abandon smoking ban in the name of 'freedom of choice'

Austrian MPs on Thursday scrapped a smoking ban in bars and restaurants that was due to come into force in May, despite a petition in its favour collecting 545,000 signatures.

The overturning of the ban, introduced by the previous government, was approved by lawmakers from the ruling coalition of the conservatives and the far-right.

In an attempt to assuage critics, they also voted to extend the minimum age for smoking to 18 as well as to ban smoking in vehicles if a minor is on board, effective from 2019.

Scrapping the ban was a key campaign pledge last year by the cigarette-loving leader of the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ), Heinz-Christian Strache, 48.
So should we follow Austria and dump the smoking ban in Bars and Restaurants? Let the market decide?

I am not a smoker, never was. Played in bands in pubs since god was a child, eyes stinging after every gig :D .. Much prefer/ed pubs without smoking ... BUT I do understand many would have an opposite view. Hate nanny state etc.

as a non smoker, i reckon democracy rules. Few smokers, send them off to the siberia of the outside tent.

at the same time, whatever people wish to ingest, read, smoke, inject , etc is mostly their own business so long as its not hurting anybody else.

I would in a heart beat, if you could go back to the way it was then.

Unfortunately, we have crap bars, crap music, crap night life, so reintroducing ciggies which are definite killers, wont reanimate the old creative culture.

Let them carry on with their cocaine, speed, and whatever they do now.

No
But rumour would have it that people took up smoking in their attempts to socialise in outside smoking areas

No I can't stand stuffy smokey bars etc! Normally I'm frothing @ the mouth against nanny statism, but this was brought in as a measure to protect workers' health, so it is well justified on that alone!
What amazed me was that it was Ireland and Eff EFf taht brought it in! It is a fantastic piece of legislation, one of the best ever passed here and it's down to Meehole as are SNAs, The HSE would be a monster in whatever guise it comes!

I gather that if a gobshyte is smoking beside you, for every cigarette they take it's doing you about 25% of the damage that it is doing to them, what else at this level would be tolerated?

I notice how smokey bars are, when I'm abroad.

The smoking ban was brought in to try to improve the health of those who work in pubs.

I think that it was a very good piece of legislation, especially as I know of two men who, having worked all their life in the bar trade, both died of emphysema/respiratory related causes.

Ah Capitalism and its woes... give the free enterprise system its head and allow smoking establishments on the basis, that its a voluntary choice for patrons and staff to accept the conditions at their own risk.

You will tolerate anything.

Ciggies are out of fashion now, but people are still drugging. I bet if you dusted the Dail toilets, they would be positive for ....coca-cola.

I left my oven on a bit to long and there was chicken grease from a previous day on it, which smouldered and the smoke in the sitting room got into my eyes and nearly drove me daft, I was so uncomfortable and it reminded me of the old Paddy Pubs back in the day!

Most likely anti-smoking propaganda
Many of my friends smoke and it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference to me

As a non smoker i have no to desire to be breathing anyone else's smoke into my lungs and although i hardly ever go to pubs i would much prefer going to one with a fresher and non stuffy environment.

I don't see why anybody should be subjected to having somebody smoke in his/her face, especially a child!
You would of course as happened in The Budestag Test, find Cocaine residue there and on a lot of banknotes in our pockets!

Indeed - market forces. if a town has 10 pubs then why shouldn't two or three allow smoking? A fair few bar staff I've know were smokers and the second hand smoke thing is largely BS.....

Passive smoking does cause health issues, there is very little doubt about that!
