FF ministers are meeting in government buildings this evening, and its widely expected that Mr Cowen will be heading to the Aras to request the president to dissolve the Dail.

Those here closely connected to sources within the Dail will be able to confirm this, as its being spoken about openly amongst the political correspondents.

Theory.
q: Will Cowen go to the Aras?
a: Yes, but only if he is certain McAlleese will refuse to dissolve the Dail to see if parties can agree to budget (and to keep it is nice and Constitutional to see if an alternative government can be formed).

Pros:
For him, he keeps his job before the FF backbenchers devour him.
For FG, it provides them with political cover to not vote down the government (in the national interest)
For Labour, it keeps them as outsiders.
For the President, she is acting in the national interest ensuring that tribal party politics is secondary to the society, economy etc
For FF, it forces FG to support the budget, so they are locked into the 4 year framework. They will then scapegoat Cowen, so they they can re-emerge as a politcal force in 2014 local elections.
For the economy, it gets a budget and four year plan which has been signed up to by 120-130 deputies and an election to follow.

Any reality to this?

why is TV3 so much better at scoops? RTE are woeful. I don't rely on RTE for any breaking news. It comes from TV3 or foreign media. Yes, I pray it's true or there'll be riots on the streets!

Please God, I have been waiting for this moment since 2001 when I first became interested in politics as a teenager.
Fair play to you for being interested, young people like you will make things better.

I wanted this Government out since the 1997 Budget, where Charlie McC gave well off, married couples £100 extra per week & disabled people £4 per week.

I wrote to our local FF politician about the unfairness & he sent me a copy of the Budget - I (obviously) didn't need a copy of the Budget, if I had written a letter to him about it.

Keep on pluggin', I will & the people who say "don't vote" or "spoil your vote", ignore them, just vote a few numbers somewhere, I don't mind as long as you, my sons and every young person does.

On behalf of the IMF/ECM the EUC should put us under direct rule by appointing a provisional government council with someone of the calibre of Mary Robinson to chair it. We do not have the time or money to waste having an election right now. This playing politics is suicidal for the nation. Having an election 6 months ago or in 6 months time would make far more rational sense. The resue deal need to finalised asap. We cannot wait for an election.

Lowry calls on Taoiseach tonight to call general election if labour and fine gael are set on not voting on the budget.
Don't think the IMF want to grant Lowry his race-course and casino or Healy-Rae his new hospital.

With Doherty in this week, Healy Rae and Lowry aganist the budget, can it pass realistically is the question, maybe Clowen should go to the park.

He should go right this minute. The electorate have a right to have their say on the débâcle Ahern, Cowen and the rest of these blithering idiots have led us into.

Only a new government will have the necessary credibility to pass a budget, and continue negotiations with the IMF/EU.
