You still get some agro over your past criminality?

No problem, let's rechristen you a "justice challenged individual"...and actually...let's not screen for criminal records either..

In another of those smiley-faced, but deeply sinister, “Dear Colleague” letters sent to universities and colleges this week, Obama’s Education Secretary John King discouraged colleges from asking applicants whether they were convicted criminals.

An accompanying pamphlet was called “Beyond the Box: Increasing Access to Higher Education for Justice-Involved Individuals.”

This is a good thing. You want people to leave crime behind? Integrate them into society. Want them to keep reoffending? Shun them from 'normal' society.

If...repeat if...you are going to allow foxes in the hen coop...at least finding out whether they've a vulpine past is prudent

So many people involved in the American justice system shouldn't be in the first place.
4.4% of the world population but 22% of the prison population. This looks like a recognition that the system is not working as well as it might.

The stats for young black men from poor backgrounds are horrible in that respect.

Seriously losing the lottery of life.....

If you read the source provided in your link, you will see that the phrase "justice-involved" is used to refer to anyone who has been involved in the US justice system, (e.g. those who have been arrested but were never convicted) not just those who have been convicted of a crime.

Given that the guidelines mentioned are applicable to this broader group, it would not be appropriate to refer to them all as convicted criminals.

What's wrong with "known to police"?

Covers a multitude and everyone knows exactly what it entails! :)

Why can't they just use 'known to the Gardai'?

You're welcome America.
