Wasn't always a fan of his style but the commentary for Maradona's goal against England in 86 was superb and something I'll never forget as it joined the commentator and audience in observing the majesty of what was happening.

Rots prided himself on a pretty good memory, but Jimmy's memory across a range of Sports was at a world-class standard and his commentary skills not far behind. R.I.P

A very moving interview with Jimmy in 2015, when asked about his most emotional moment. He mentions his son, Paul, played professional football and the first game he played, Jimmy was the commentator for the station and that, he says was very special. Paul sadly passed away.

Just heard on Morning Ireland claim he commentated on the silver medal at the 1984 Olympics won by John Delaney for Ireland.

Jimmy had a great sense of humour. That's one event I'd say the memory man could never forget.

I,m sure he was a lovely man but I thought he was an awful commentator, used to change channel to avoid him.

Rest in peace Jimmy, he was a great guy.

I thought he was a good commentator myself unlike most at RTE. Jimmy knew that a tv commentator's job is different to a radio one's.
In other words there's no need to constantly tell the viewer what they can see with their own eyes. The job rather is to add value at appropriate times and silences are OK. Something that twit Ger "who will win this game" Canning has never twigged.

RIP Jimmy.

Personally thought he was a dreadful commentator - five seconds behind the action. Heard some nonsense this morning that he was the greatest commentator ever. Michael O'Hehir and Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh would have something to say about that.
