I have it on good authority that Declan McGlinchey is in no way politically active and is chiefly and exclusively concerned with raising his family.

Added to this the farcical nature of the forensic evidence and the circumstances where he was in the area with his small children on the day the device was discovered. If somebody had knowledge that there was an explosive device in an area they would hardly be likely to bring their children within harms way of it.

The prosecution is politically-motivated harrassment and scapegoating based on nothing more than his family name.

That good authority was totally wrong though. The following is from an obituary to McGlinchey posted on an IRSP news website:

"Comrade Declan McGlinchy

He was also a committed revolutionary, espousing every day of his life the ideals which he inherited from his mother and father; comrades Mary and Dominic McGlinchey.

Declan himself was also a committed participant in the struggle for Irish Freedom. His journey as an activist saw him taking a ‘hands on’ role within the Republican movement, a decision which at the tender age of 16 saw him occupy a Portlaoise prison cell, right next to that which had been home to his father as a POW. In later years his activism brought him no small degree of state harassment, arrest and indeed had brought him through the gates of Maghaberry Prison.

In recent times he had set about building his political home into a rejuvenated and capable Revolutionary force in the wider Bellaghy area, committing himself totally to structuring, networking and lobbying on behalf of the movement, increasing its ranks, raising its profile and re-establishing the IRSP as a credible and noteworthy force in South Derry and beyond."

That article of course uses the ambiguous words that are regularly used by Irish Republicans, to leave it unclear whether the person was involved in violence or not - "revolutionary", "committed participant in the struggle for Irish Freedom", "activist", "‘hands on’ role within the Republican movement". They are of course scared to declare clearly that the person used violence, but the various buzz words are there to impress those who know what the words are intended to mean.

Declan certainly is a republican, and he was accommodated on the republican landing in maghaberry when he was initially charged with this. However, he is most certainly innocent of this allegation, and he now takes nothing to do with politics.

This arrest is about labelling those in south derry who broke from the provisional movement as militarists and dissidents, when nothing could be further from the truth. The PSNI campaign against the mcglincheys also went hand in hand with the usual provisional smear campaign. This is PSNI/provisional black propaganda at its worst.

The issue at the time wasn't whether he was involved in politics or not.

The issue was whether he was involved in illegally building bombs. Building bombs isn't political activity, no matter how much republicans pretend that it is. It's terrorism.
