She is the first woman from Sinn Féin to become the Lord Mayor of Belfast, and only the fifth female lord mayor in the council's history.

"The role of lord mayor now has more importance given the lack of a Stormont assembly."

Ms Hargey is understood to be very well respected, not just by other parties within Belfast City Council, but also by council staff - having worked for her party colleague Arder Carson when he was lord mayor in 2015.

Another first for SF and a great day for Women's rights and equality given the fact there have only been 5 female Mayors in the history of BCH since partition divided the Country.

How many female Presidents have there been in the US Tom?

How many female mayors of New York come to that?

You're a nauseating hypocrite Tom.

Ireland had a female head of state from Ardoyne in Belfast.
Where's your head of state from?

One of the most pathetic deflections I have seen here for some time, no surprise though from Billyray who is very well aware I have engaged in discussions here and elsewhere on Women's rights and Equality issues across the Globe, thing is, I did not enter a thread where the election of someone becoming first female Mayor was being discussed.

Disgraceful trolling and clearly designed to deflect from Deirdre's elevation to Mayor................shame on you AH.

Does she support the torture and mass murder of children like her party leader - London Lou McBabyphobe.

3 Female leaders at the minute. The Queen, the PM and the First Minister.
The British Queen isn't elected, Teresa May gambled and lost at the polls and now depends on the DUP, Arlene Foster couldn't sell a comprise deal to the Orange Order, to which she is beholden. You get the mysonogy drift.
Mary McAleese was a wee Ardoyne girl and Irish head of state.
You get the drift....

Wha'? The YES vote was all 'thanks to Sinn Fein'? They were actually quite late to the Repeal table and still haven't formally supported the 12-week proposal though I presume they will later this month. So to attribute the 66% YES vote to SF, who incidentally got 16% support in the referendum exit poll, is a bit hilarious.
