I have a mad idea.

Let's just liqudate and bankrupt the entity these bond holders and investors took their casino risk on..........bankrupt the country formally and end the banks. Then just setup a new country with the money left over entirely free of debt with new clean banks. Im pretty sure this could be done over night. Nobody would have to pay their mortages, all debt would be cancelled and thus the new Ireland suddenly becomes the cleanest safest place for those investors not burnt in the madness.

Now obviously we would have to think of a new name for the country...any suggestions?

Whatya think? :)

I'd like to see a Second Republic, and this time get the likes of the Swedes/Swiss/Dutch to write the new constitution & laws for us.

Southern Ireland
What happened to the middle and north? Whatever of the fractious ones in the northeast I don't think the people in Donegal would be too pleased if we abandon all sense of geography.

Like Bobby Ewing in the shower in "Dallas". The entire last season of Ireland was just a bad dream.

Sounds great, except that it would be Bertie emerging from the shower, like some late night version of a News of the World commercial "I never taught I'd end up here".

The United Counties of Ireland.

When you mean overnight, you just mean changing in one night? To create a new nation requires alot of planning, and researching.
Didn't Belgium's break from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands follow on a Brussels riot occasioned by the performance of an opera.

Punish the prudent and reward the reckless in proportion to their prudence and recklessness respectively. You will have to do it every 10 years cause of the debts everyone will know they can run up and never pay back. Who will fund this exactly?

We should call it Greater Inishvickillane (owned by Fianna Fail politicians and bankers)

We might add "Under new management".

Or how about La Nouvelle Abbeville after the home of our admired greatest Taoiseach?

The Debt-Free State?
Irland?
Eastern Rockall?
Perhaps split the state into Good Ireland and Bad Ireland?

Do tell. 1798,1916,1948 are all obvious but what's the other 3? Are you counting 1922-37 and 1937-48 as two more? And that still leaves another....1848?

We could call ourselves "Citibank pay cash" and hope a few stray cheques find their way here.

You're missing the ones proclaimed by Emmet, Young Ireland and the Fenians. That's four including the original then 1916 and 1948 makes six.
